Songxuexiao Love Week Trope List Prompt #9: Bodyswap In a bodyswap narrative, characters have their consciousness moved from their own body to the body of another affected character. In some examples of the trope—typically in settings where people wouldn’t believe a bodyswap is possible—characters try to keep others in their lives from figuring out they’re not themselves. Humour and catharsis come from the (often failed) attempts at performing as each other, and from experiencing life “in each other’s shoes.” In other stories—such as in a cultivation, fantasy, or sci-fi setting—the people around them may know about the swap and attempt to help them regain their own bodies. Bodyswap presents an opportunity to see characters in a new light, to witness their typical mannerisms or habits on a new body, and to explore differences of sensory experience, emotive response, and physical ability.

Songxuexiao Love Week Trope List Prompt #8: Accidental Baby Acquisition Accidental baby acquisition is a trope where the characters accidentally acquire a baby (it’s very straightforwardly named). They could literally find a baby—for example, if all the adults in a village were killed and a child was left behind—or have a baby unexpectedly dumped on them by someone they know. Stories typically focus on how the relationship builds or changes with a child involved, or on characters who were not previously romantically involved getting together through their shared parental role. The characters’ lack of preparation or expertise in child-rearing is often also a key feature. “Baby” is not necessarily always interpreted literally: toddlers and young children can also be part of the trope. Older children typically are not, as they have different needs and are more independent than babies or toddlers.
