As the first woman to officially attend a Dutch university and earn a medical doctorate in the Netherlands (graduating in 1879), she became one of the country's first female doctors. In 1882, she opened the world's first birth control clinic in Amsterdam, advocated for women's suffrage, better working conditions for women, the regulation of prostitution, and international peace efforts.
