@playzholder.bsky.social I was going to also helpfully add to your post but you blocked replies and quote posts. For those on Chromium browsers, you can change the extension ending from .webp/.avif to .png/.jpg natively when you save image as.

Yeah, if I do it, I'd have to replace all my image galleries with webp versions. Doubling wouldn't make sense since I'm already out of my 1GB of space with how big my png files are.

That would defeat the point of replacing everything with webp in the first place. The webp version would be the original image.

Yep. I've been on Linux for a while, so I didn't even realize they changed formats until I tried saving some stuff for references on Windows where my CSP install is.

Actually I take back saying "no idea." Basically, it's a lossless image format that takes significantly less space compared to .png. The only real problem with it is that Microsoft doesn't support it on Windows for some reason, so it ends up being annoying for most people.

Seriously, ya'll don't know how many times I've wanted to replace all the pics on my website with webp versions, but end up not doing it cause most people wouldn't be able to see them on their computer if they save them, and it would make people mad.

I got two quote tweets stating this, and they're not wrong. Webp should be the image fileype of the future, but Microslop and Adobe are dragging their feet implementing support for it. It's a lossless file type like .png that takes a fraction of the space.

Webp is a lossless filetype so there's no quality loss, and the file sizes are lower than png. It should actually be a great thing, but Windows doesn't open those files in the default photos app, so webp just ends up being annoying.
