Scotland just pledged to scrap the two-child benefit cap, lifting 15,000 kids out of poverty. Meanwhile in England, 1.5 million kids are affected by this cruel policy. Abolishing it could lift 250,000 kids out of poverty, easing hardship for 850,000 more. Time to act @teamlabouruk.bsky.social.

Under MAiD in Canada - which has now been expanded to allow AD for cases of "unmet social need" i.e. holes in the social safety net, a socioeconomic category rather than an exclusively medical category - people are being refused social support and offered AD instead. That's utter nihilism imho.

if you regularly feel (because of mental illness / trauma / the brutality of living in capitalism) that you’d be better off dead, the state and your GP putting their thumb on the scale to say “yes marginalised person, we’d agree you’re better off dead, off you go to AD” is incredibly inhumane.

I don’t view AD and abortion as analogous. For one thing, AD is a final decision whereas abortion is one decision/a medical necessity in the context of the whole life of the pregnant person.

The religious right will use AD as a wedge but that doesn’t invalidate left opposition

Introducing AD and *allowing GPs to bring it up to patients in consultations* in a society where ableist narratives about healthcare and benefits are already pervasive, will quickly normalise “disabled lives are a burden on the state and should be shortened to save taxpayer money” rhetoric.

I’m sure if I was in the late stages of a terminal/degenerative illness, I’d want an assisted death. I think that reforming prosecution guidelines on AD can create space where that medical option is available to the terminally ill and willing, but not offered for mental health/disability.

I hope a disabled writer on the left (probably anonymous, for their own wellbeing) can publish a good essay on chronic su*c*dality and assisted dying. So many of those on the left who are being dismissive on the issue can’t fathom that a society with both AD + austerity is effectively pro-su*c*de
