We can’t accept the status quo. Missing class is often the first phase in a downward spiral for too many students.

Showing up is everything — and it’s up to all of us to make it possible.

But our state took a step backward when it dropped chronic absenteeism as an indicator of school success. We cannot blind ourselves to this crisis.

Policymakers have begun to embrace this relationship-based approach, with the City investing in FairFuturesNY to bring mentoring to youth in foster care. NYC DOE is bringing parents into the process to help other families access city resources.

When students feel connected — to teachers, mentors, peers, or the curriculum — they return to school.

Our counseling, after-school support, and mentoring help rebuild those bonds. This year, The Children’s Village celebrated the high school graduation of 136 students.

🎒Last year, 300K NYC public school students were chronically absent. That’s 1 in 3 kids — and half of foster youth – missing more than 10% of class days.

But we know it’s possible to change that, because we built The Eliza, a state-of-the-art development in integrated Inwood available to former foster youth.

Our plan calls for private capital and public policy changes to secure 800 more units of this kind of quality housing.

The plan was shaped by foster youth who experienced these housing struggles – they defined our quality housing standards.

Their experience taught them the power of location: there’s a huge lack of options in diverse neighborhoods.

We partnered with Fair FuturesNY, Good River Partners, and HR&A Advisors to create a blueprint to END the foster-care-to-homelessness pipeline in #NYC.

The goal? 800 new, quality homes for youth exiting care over the next 5 years.

Every year, hundreds of young people in NY age out of foster care with few housing options and little support. Nationally, 46% experience homelessness before 26.
