This is so good, Rachael! Did you read Dragon Skin by Karen Foxlee? Was my book of the year (for any age) in 2021. Speaking of firmly planted in real world, with a tiny bit of magic. It's middle grade, completely emotionally wrenching, and the most stunning writing
