I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

A butterfly resting on a narrow green leaf. The butterfly is seen in profile with its wings folded up. The fore underwing has some bright green scales but is mostly orange. The hind underwing is dominated by bright green scales. Both underwings have white bands that parallel the curving back wing edges. The bands are edged with black, orange, and in this light blue. The body is gray. The legs and antennae are finely striped black and white, with orange at the tips of the antennae.

#Teacher thought, writing on Compass with house points/ commendations, it is nice to thank parents. I have up to 90 percent of parents reading Compass each week and their kids are better because they now know parents are watching. It's much better than a once a term conference

Had a student say to me on Friday “I don’t want to learn any maths that isn’t in the numeracy test for initial teachers” and I am proud of controlling my face as I said “There will be some maths that looks like it’s not in the test, but will be necessary to understand to do the things in the test.”

Well done (on face control). It's taken 4 years but we finally seem to have less push back on practicing squares, primes. Because the students pick what thing we are practicing that day, it has helped. Also answers can be repeated!
