Always a rewarding process doing that, brings significance and meaning to the work chap. Love it

A hide on the coast near St Andrews converted to black and white

Morning all, been a busy start of the year and photography has taken a backseat for a number of weeks. However, got the chance to spend a few days on the Fife coast

A seascape with heavy foreboding skies, however a break in the clouds lets some light through creating a pool of colour on the sea. From the Faroes.

I wrote about taking this photo in my latest Substack. A β€œstop the car” moment when we finally saw some atmosphere. No time for tripods, just grab the camera and run.

Also a look at working in black and white, which I seldom do.

A shattered deciduous tree surrounded by pines. That’s the literal description, but what I saw was:

- the relationship of a tiny original tree surrounded by huge overbearing farmed trees.
- the way the light hit the horizontal branches β€œreaching” towards it. I couldn’t decide if that was in that or embrace.
- the darkness and density of the wood behind isolating that little tree.
- the directional flow of the branches and the contrast of the deciduous trunk being upright and static.

Taking the time to observe, is far more important to me than choosing a compelling subject.

In the end the important thing to remember in photography is just to get outside, observe, tell stories even if just in your my head and photograph the whole rather than the subject.

I was bemoaning the lack of fresh β€œsubjects” when I remembered this. This is what my photography is all about - observation. Even with a subject in mind it’s rarely what I end up photographing. #GetOutside
