More Perfect Union | A man in Oklahoma was arrested for speaking out against data centers | Instagram 24K likes, 1,224 comments - perfectunion on February 18, 2026: "A man in Oklahoma was arrested for speaking out against data centers".

When this is happening all over the country, definitely in the state I currently live in too (Michigan where some of these meetings are beyond heartbreaking), what exactly are we supposed to be talking about when we talk about AI?

One thing AI has revealed is that there are a whole lot of people who have neither interesting ideas nor the talent to express them, and apparently not even any real will or desire to cultvate either of these things… but still for some reason desperately want to be regarded as artists.

This administration felt a need to interrupt its virtually nonstop death drive to reassure Americans it would "force” companies to absorb the cost of data centers.

That means the mass revolt against AI data centers is working. trib.al/mBIaQda

I agree. I believe that King would have, on principle, come to do the same.

arguments from analogy to other tech, as we tend to pick examples that make our case for us. So, why is AI like the internet rather than, say, NFTs, which almost no one cares about anymore? These three points are the basis of my view, and I do think they demonstrate some rather serious thought man!

As an educator and an artist, I’ve had this conversation so many times now: this technology is, so far, only harmful in both those areas, *and* it is not up to me to find a use for it because someone (who is selling something) says I have to. Also, β€œinevitability” is not an argument, nor are

Respectfully, I don’t see how you can ask the leftβ€”us materialistsβ€”to make that a real distinction. To whit, cf @triofrancos.bsky.social new book on Lithium as a powerful demonstration of how those areas cannot be disentangled, certainly not by those of us who want to see a better world. Also:

Also like β€œSomehow all of the interesting energy for discussions about the long-range future of humanity is concentrated on the right,” wrote Joshua Achiam, head of mission alignment at OpenAI, on X last year. β€œThe left has completely abdicated their role in this discussion”. FALSE.

We on the left have, and leading to conclusions that people who like AI or want to sell it don’t like. So, the basic claim of the piece is not true: we take it dead seriously.

17.02.2026 17:34 β€” πŸ‘ 14    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

I think it’s totally false to say that the left is not taking AI β€œseriously” or not thinking critically about it. We are just not doing it in a way that concludes that it is either β€œgood” or, more importantly, β€œinevitable.” Rather, we are having the kind of material and historical conversations that

There are free DAWs, free VSTs, pretty much everything you need to make music on a computer, which they assume you already own, are available for free or very little. The only thing Suno is doing is stealing the rewarding parts of music-making from you. It's a vending machine, not a kitchen.

What I need people to understand is when legislators argue that professors should teach more and research less, it's not because they think our research is actually worthless. It's because they don't want anyone to be able to develop or disseminate expertise that goes against their party line.

David Roberts: it is really unfortunate that it’s not possible to have a reasonable discussion about AI on here

Once again: people are angry for very good reason, and this brand of post is perhaps one of the most tedious and bewildering. Practically every social media platform is rabidly pro-β€˜AI’ so are govts, academia, companies. This one small space being critical of AI is okay, I think.

Oatly banned from using word β€˜milk’ to market plant-based products in UK Supreme court makes ruling after Swedish firm’s long-running battle with trade association Dairy UK

The meaning of words is to be decided not by their use, usefulness, or history, but by their commercial benefit to the most powerful lobby groups. I have a recipe for almond milk in a cookbook from 1226. It has been used as a term in English for hundreds of years.

It’s known for making submarines. So how does this remote Cumbrian venue attract the world’s boldest musicians? In a park keeper’s lodge in Barrow-in-Furness, Full of Noises has hosted the likes of Julia Holter and Lonnie Holley – and is a model for why arts funding matters

"This militarised landscape is the unlikely home of Full of Noises, an experimental music and arts venue with a capacity of 40 whose first event featured krautrock legends Faust destroying an electric guitar with a pneumatic drill."

How does this remote venue attract the world’s boldest musicians?:

I was just denied entry to the Dilley detention facility while my constituent, seven-year-old Diana, remains inside.

What kind of sick, horrific conditions are children being forced to endure in there?

I will be back tomorrow. Accountability can’t wait.
