Joy Buolamwini researches how discrimination is built into artificial intelligence, including facial recognition technologies, and she advocates for technology to serve all people. She founded the Algorithmic Justice League to create a world with more equitable and accountable technology.

Sofia Ongele is a student, activist, and technologist who uses coding and social media to advocate for marginalized communities. At 17, she launched the award-winning app ReDawn, which offers confidential support and resources for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Eden Wilson is the founder of Lemonerdy, a virtual learning tool on Youtube that teaches kids how to code. After uploading her first video, girls worldwide sent her messages telling her how happy they were to see someone who looked like them, coding.

This #BlackHistoryMonth, we celebrate trailblazers who are shaping the future of computer science! These heroes remind us that technology is most powerful when it serves everyone.

Zahra’s focus on interdisciplinary AI projects allows students to develop AI and subject area expertise while getting direct experience of the real-world applications of the AI tools. Her AI-integrated math projects, such as having students create a slope classifier AI model, are easily adaptable for other subject areas: classifying rocks in science class, pronunciation tools or storytelling projects in ELA, or historical photo classification in social studies.
