it's still crazy to me that they called it that

i want the Yoko Taro Eva series to be good, but once we've established Eva beyond the original, there should be a lot of controversial or really bad Eva shows. the FLCL sequels are the roadmap. Iron-Blooded Orphans is the target. i want G Evangelion. disappoint people more than Gridman Universe

it's always felt like the most obvious interpretation of those elements, to me. especially considering how Danganronpa was developed at the time when reality TV was becoming increasing popular and lurid, especially with the advent of the internet

the first game in particular is the one that had the reality TV commentary, and V3 feels like it's just rehashing that same idea. DR2 copies a lot from DR1, but that part doesn't really make it in

i don't fault the first game, no. there's a reason it's the only mainline DR game i actually like

i can't see V3 as anything but a redux of the first game, but with a metatextual coat of paint

retcons that don't totally align with what was established before are just a part of Danganronpa. like how did the Junko's corpse stuff happen in DR2 when she got flattened in the first game. i see those issues as Kodaka being bad at planning long-term

yeah, definitely

it's a little harder to have an anthology-like feel with full series, compared to short OVAs, but i've been comparing this to Gundam, and i think that's a good example of this kind of thing done right. for better and for worse, Gundam has been used to tell a wide variety of stories

if anything, i think "a Danganronpa game which is irreverent to Danganronpa" is just 100 Line

but putting that aside, i think all of this is why the FLCL sequels are the target to hit. get a variety of people and have them do a variety of things. not every one should be a hit. different people should enjoy different ones. pull down the sacred and diffuse it

i never got the feeling that DR3 or V3 were trying to redefine anything. just the opposite, it feels like they cared more than the series had before about "what Danganronpa is"

people never even gave the FLCL sequels a chance. most people who trash them haven't seen them

admittedly, i only saw the first two, but they really got it right that first time. Alternative is better than the original, but i'm sure there are people who feel that way about the others

there's a reason why the FLCL sequels were the first thing i mentioned in my follow-up. i like the FLCL sequels quite a lot. for me, those are a success of continuing a series that people thought was settled. as long as we get things in that vein, i'll be happy
