The call was made during a recent sermon titled โ€œPray the Gay Awayโ€ inside Sure Foundation Baptist Church on the northwest side of the city.

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing good to be proud about being a f*****. You ought to blow yourself in the head, in the back of the head. Youโ€™re so disgusting,โ€ Stephen Falco said from the pulpit. He was speaking during the churchโ€™s โ€œMenโ€™s Preaching Night.โ€ The event was streamed live on their Facebook page.

A bunch of f****** that want to come around, walk on our streets, and demand our children, and we should walk in the eye and say, โ€˜No, youโ€™re not going to have our children,โ€™โ€ he said.

Falco continued to call for the death of the queer community.

Following the sermon, I-Team 8 reached out to the church about Falcoโ€™s message.

โ€œHeโ€™s only calling for the death penalty and suicide for the actual sodomites (homosexuals),โ€ the church said in an emailed statement. โ€œThe Bible teaches that those people are worthy of death. They are supposed to be executed by the government. We are not to take the law into our own hands.โ€

It's not surprising that the pastor gave this sermon during a "Men's Preaching Night" event. As @cjpascoe.bsky.social told us in her research almost 20 years ago, straight men use homophobia to police each other's masculinity.

Every time a misogynist calls another misogynist a rapist, I always think of @cjpascoe.bsky.social and Jocelyn Hollanderโ€™s article:

As I said in my blurb: The High School takes us on a compelling historical journey, offering a unique blend of sociology, history and personal memoirโ€ฆA brilliant and insightful work that may have many of us digging out our own yearbooks and revisiting our own stories. Check it out!

Somehow all the students who showed up to one of my Transforming Identities seminars yesterday were international students. So we did some close reading of a few ethnographic vignettes from @cjpascoe.bsky.social's Nice Is Not Enough together, as if it's an English class. It's such a fun experience!

For a more recent analysis of gender, sexuality and educational outcomes check out Nice Is Not Enough, which provides updates on a lot of the dynamics I documented in Dude - which can feel a little far from some students' lived experiences these days :). www.ucpress.edu/books/nice-i...

Right. That was the first thing I thought about when I realized what they were looking at. And, quite frankly, I stopped teaching my 500 student class in person because of similar safety concerns.

Today I learned that some buildings on campus post signs noting the name & time of each course taught outside the classroom in which they are taught. I learned this because five or so men gathered around/pointed at said sign during the middle of my Sex & Society class.

What is the role of professional scholars in civic life? How and why should academics seek to reach audiences beyond their disciplines and institutions? Must there be tension between advancing along an academic career path and taking part in public conversations, or can these goals reinforce each other? Cohen will present his new book, Citizen Scholar, a practitionerโ€™s guide to civic engagement today, showing current and aspiring social scientists how to build a career in the public sphere. Drawing from personal experience and in-depth research, Cohen gives straightforward advice that acknowledges professional risks as well as rewards. He calls on readers to embrace the reciprocal relationship between professional scholarship and active citizenship, arguing that aligning personal and vocational identities can enhance both public and academic contributions. Citizen Scholar explores intellectual work on social media, communication on topical issues, the role of political activism, and how to build trust while developing a public intellectual identity. It features lively examples from Cohenโ€™s own work, from data-visualization principles to his experience suing President Trump for blocking him on Twitterโ€”and winning.

Exhortations to kindness make it look like we are confronting these topics, but really being individually nice can let us sidestep the much harder work of building systemic racial, gender, and sexual equality into our organizations, institutions and society. 3/n
