no, its more like im comparing people interested in talking about esperanto to people interested in talking about toki pona
if more of the people who are interested in talking about esperanto speak esperanto than toki pona, this data would not show it

if you want to analyze the mindset of toki pona speakers thatd be a little different from getting a community size though, no?

bit conjectural, but yeah from my own experience half the toki pona community can barely speak the language, and its grown very normal to speak english in toki pona spaces, thats the main reason i dont interact with the community much
whereas from my experience with esperanto they do speak esperanto

oh and i believe there have been polls conducted in both communities, but i dont know much about that

yes and like i said, this is far from perfect. however, it is quantified AND apples to apples!
i dont know if youre seriously saying we should be asking every individual human alive on how much they speak a silly conlang but for obvious reasons thats a little out there

but yeah comparing inof itself is usually where twitter arguments are born, so like yeah this thread was pretty twitter from the start

i mean im not op but comparing is fun, and its interesting to see where things stand in relation to other things. i for one would love to see toki pona get more speakers

and yeah its not like im spending all my time comparing these, but i am spending a lot of time teaching my boyfriend toki pona

idk what else id check but there! esperanto has a more sizable overall but toki pona is rather close on reddit and much bigger on discord

yeah i was picturing counting the number of entrants into major scrabble events in both langauges

im not entirely sure what point youre making here but yes, when sonja compared spaces online she did her best to keep it the same, members on the biggest dicord servers, facebook groups, whatever

but using these online communities does help paint a picture of the languages overall presence, which in turn gives an idea of how many "speakers" it has

if you wanted to quantify speakers of conlangs, how would you do it?

this way is kinda like if i were to go check the english and french scrabble communities. but maybe scrabble is really popular in france and that ends up bigger

you said that it hasnt been quantified- when it has, and moved the goalpost to some word that sonja used. to be blunt, its the kind of awful thought process ive only ever seen used on twitter
if you wanted to argue that this way of quantifying it is invalid then that wouldve been a much better point

i mean fighting games still do this but i feel like thats because its obligatory for a fighting game to have a loud announcer

i dont talk to a whole lot of old people and im sure esperanto is popular among them, but toki pona is definitely rising

the refusal to listen and otherwise repeating the same invalid point has a similar air to someone who doesnt know how to talk to people
though fwiw i do think theres more ppl conversational in toki pona (i.e. speakers) than esperanto, though theyre usually worse
