A playmat broken out into different areas, color-coded by faction. On top of the mat are counter-sheets, rulebook, and player aids.
I invested in a printed neoprene mapboard and Blue Panther-printed counters for the F&E iteration. I have not for the current iteration because I'm hopeful it'll get published eventually.

The current iteration I moved beyond the Star Trek franchise. It's also a better, tighter game (I need to retrofit some of the new rules back on the F&E version).
I found using an existing property for earlier iterations gave me benchmarks to gauge progress.
When I set out to do a sci-fi version of Seas of Thunder, I started with Federation Space as a proof of concept. Satisfied, I then moved on to Federation & Empire. Knowing full well it would never be publishable I still invested in quality components so that I would always have it to play.
