Mindful Living Community Garden update: This week's Community Dinners harvest was so huge, and we're celebrating during tonight's garden Happy Hour. This week's featured ingredient is Staghorn Sumac that I foraged while in Wisconsin, which we'll use to make truly unique Arnold Palmers.

A seriously crazy purple flower. There is a layer of wide purple petals, but then there's this layer on top of them composed of long, wavy, string-like pale lavender petals. The center has yellow reproductive structures that are outsized and kinda architectural looking, which contrasts with the delicate petals.

Garden update: the Passion flower is finally blooming! It looks like it came from outer space, but it's actually native!

Back from vacation and enjoying a busy garden day. First, the weekly Community Dinners harvest, then the garden Happy Hour!

It was just stunning (not in a good way) to see so many experienced PhDs applying for a position that's just above entry level - especially knowing it's just the beginning.

My mom always said, "If you're buying something you don't really need, you're getting ripped off, no matter how low the price is." In other words, please stop the incessant Prime Day propaganda.

One appropriate response is to pressure your state to outlaw the subminimum wage. As an IL resident (and staffer of a disability nonprofit paying disabled staff equitably) I'm proud of Gov Pritzker for signing the Dignity In Pay act to phase out the subminimum wage in our state.

As a person working for a non-profit employing people with disabilities in social enterprise businesses, I assure you organizations can pay at least minimum wage (we have since 1908). For those that are used to only offering a subminimum wage, it may just take some creativity to transition.

I lead the grants team for a nonprofit and had to hire a new grant writer a couple months ago. The first day of the search alone, we received 6 resumes from PhDs, and yes, I ended up hiring one (a neuroscientist, and he's working out great)
