Unis automatically tell HMRC when students have reached the 4 year post reg mark, so there is no escaping from that. It's in the student loan contract, in very small prints and if you are aware which plan you're on.

... and if say you earn a decent amount one month, the system automatically assumes this is what you'd be earning every month for that tax year, so taxes you to that level.

I wish the media were better informed. You don't start repaying once you#ve left Uni and start earning above the threshold. That's really not how it works. In my case, it's after 4 years from the first registration.

Still does not seem to deter many academics lured by the kudos associated with attending or presenting at conferences and how good that looks on a CV. Integrity is cheap for some these days.
