I have done small bits of writing about this but going long on it exhausts me. I just end up crying my eyes out or I’m so overwhelmed that it requires editing skills I simply lack.

I love him though. I miss him. I don’t know what he’d think of this world right now. He had a much better world.

He shifted my life in many many ways, and he did that for anyone worth their salt that he encountered. That sounds like romanticized fluff but for all his flaws, he was incredibly generous. You’ll hear that from just about anyone who isn’t a parasite in the biz.

15 year old me grabbing a copy of “Rich Man’s Eight Track” at Pure Pop records in Burlington, Vt is a shift. Being jumped into a jumpsuit in Chicago at 29 (a year after my own mother’s sudden passing) is a shift. Then at 47, in California, an after hours call, post work, obviously another shift.

Most jobs, you don’t speak to your “ex-boss” after you quit, even if it was amicable. This was obviously more than that. I am grateful I got to say to him “thank you for changing my life” though it might have irritated him to hear that.

It’s all sad. I cry about it often. I will be making coffee or doing laundry, or I’ll be in a book store and a thought occurs—his laugh, the way he’d greet me, the endless texts, or some goddamn song shows up, or a joke, or some headbutt we had over a bad stretch of biz that truly meaningless now
