Special thanks to Binsted Viols, a beautiful complement to the programme & to our voices , proving composer Nico Muhly’s remark that β€œone of the most thrilling things about the sound of violas da gamba playing together is the sense of their phrasing being derived from vocal music”.

Composers let themselves go in full anthems, & even printers sensed the fun setting β€œpraises” in Gibbons’s β€˜O clap you hands’, a GOAT banger. Let’s also clap Chichester’s bad boy, Weelkes, whose β€˜Hosanna to the son of David’ guarantees a raised roof.

This Saturday's concert includes 2 Ascension anthems: Byrd 'Christ rising' & Gibbons 'We praise thee, O Father'. Gibbons may be missing a 3rd part: 2nd part doesn't end 'Amen'. But it does refer to the earlier anthem.

What do we know about John Bull’s life and what difference does it make to singing that perennial choral favourite, the Starre Anthem? Very little, argues Chris in his latest blog post, and probably just as well.

17th-century Ely comes to Chichester. Our #Gibbons400 concert July 5 includes Xmas anthem β€˜O ye little flock’ by John Amner who followed Tye & Whyte at Ely Cathedral. Revered in Ely - a close has been named after him!

Hear the drama and wonder of the angels’ message.

On the eve of the #Gibbons400 (the anniversary, not our concert!) Chris listened to some choice Gibbons recordings and jotted down some thoughts about how to get the most out of his verse and full anthems in performance.

Kuhnau’s Quinquagesima cantata 'Gott, sei mir gnΓ€dig' starting part 2 of our concert in Fareham is dated 1705.

Our chronos fixation differs from Kuhnau & Bach. Theirs was was closer to kairos, church moments, constant arrival.

Concert poster shows LΓΌbeck St Mary’s where Buxtehude was organist 1668-1707. Bach visited 1705 during Abendmusik season & our prog features some of Buxtehude’s music that Bach might have heard during his stay. We hope that our audience will find it as impressive as Bach did.
