How can beaver dams slow water when their pools are full?
By creating more surface area & surface roughness, ie more friction.
By allowing access to natural floodplains, increasing water storage areas.
By not just being single dams but cascades of dam after dam after dam.

In the UK, most agri-environment subsidy schemes support human pond creation, with little financial incentive for landowners to accommodate beaver wetlands, despite having a higher percentage of insects and species.

"The push to farm all available land to produce as much food as possible during WW2 continues into the current subsidy system. Even when farmers want to leave marginal and hard-to-manage areas alone, the subsidy system drives them to keep fighting nature."
