Another morning on the Kumano Kodo, an ancient pilgrimage route in Wakayama, Japan. The small village is Koguchi, a rest area on the 4-5 day Nakahechi route. From there the trail continues with the Ogumotori-goe section, via the Dogiri-zaka / "Body Breaking Slope" to Nachi Taisha

Walking in rain and fog from Kifune Shrine to Kurama Temple in the mountains of northern Kyoto. There is a 5km trail up over Mt. Kurama which connects the shrine, temple, and 2 riverside villages. On this morning in late October the fall colors were just starting to show.

Cosmos flowers in Tamba, a rural area of Hyogo, Japan. It seems fallow rice fields often have these flowers in fall, and I was lucky enough to catch them in bloom on an October morning. I still don't know if they're planted strictly for beauty or if they play a soil fertilization role

A traditional seating area and large wooden vat used in traditional soy sauce production. I had a chance to pick up a few bottles and try some soy sauce ice cream before taking a walk in heavy rain around the factories the next morning.

Angel Road is a narrow sandbar connecting the Japanese island of Shodoshima to a couple smaller islands in the Seto Inland Sea. The Road is only walkable at low tide and is completely under water when the tide comes in.

Mitarai, once a bustling harbor town with teahouses and entertainment, is now a quiet little village on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea in Kure, Japan. The country's oldest clock shop still operates on the village's main street, and many other buildings are well preserved

Mitaki-dera, a forest temple in the mountains outside of Hiroshima, Japan. It is named for it's 3 waterfalls within the temple grounds and is the start of a popular hiking leading up the mountain. I walked through on a rainy afternoon with distant thunder.

Early morning in Gujo Hachiman. I spent a night here, with a look at the Gujo Odori dance festival in the evening, and then walking along the town's canals and rivers early in the morning. Water everywhere.

The Omihachiman Sagicho Fire Festival is held in Shiga on the 3rd weekend in March (soon). I walked through last year and it was quite a raucous scene in a beautiful old merchant town. Omihachiman is easily accessed from Kyoto by train.

Engyoji is a sprawling temple complex on Mt. Shosa in Himeji. It's usually crowded with people in autumn, but I hiked up before the first ropeway of the day to walk in peace with the birds, leaves, and ancient architecture.
