lololol- this just came up for me on Youtube. "Add warmth, sincerity, & nuance to your writing" by using a mechanical device. We really are living in the dumbest - and most dispiriting - timeline

Apparently, march is women in horror month. Excellent! I'm reasonably good on the canonical stuff - Shirley Jackson, Daphne du Maurier, Anne Rice - and enjoy contemporary stuff by the likes of Catriona Ward, but could definitely be reading more widely.

Send any/all recommendations this way pls 📚

Well, no, they’re not just as wrong. The bigger error is not seeing that “trying to win over voters from a party on the opposite end of the spectrum, whose values your core voters oppose” is not same as “chasing voters from party on same side ideologically whose values your core voters like.”

Hello! I'm still reading Possessed which, I confess, I'm not enjoying a great deal.

Good Morning Blue Sky! Hope you’re all ok? Today I’m currently reading The Misheard World by Aliya Whiteley which has some pointed thoughts on war. What are you reading at the moment?

Soon there will be few humans who do not speak solely in these phrases spawned by technocapitalism: "circle back", "deep dive", "content", "creator", "physical media", "brand", "hop on a call". They are the incipient signs en route to our unique magical brains being replaced by polypropylene & wire.

Congratulations to Hannah Spencer and the Green Party on a historic by-election win in Gorton & Denton, beating Reform and pushing Labour into third.

Very bored after a week of the lurgy. But at least there's the Gorton by-election news and fallout to follow.

Congratulations to The Green Party and Hannah Spencer for such a strong victory in Gorton and Denton - Matt Goodwin seems to be blaming a dirty tricks campaign of the Greens persuading people to vote for them by having policies people wanted to vote for

i’m tired of every paper (even critical ones) on societal impact of AI starting by both-siding the “benefits” and risks/harms of AI

in academia, i would like us to arrive at a collective reckoning that we don’t need to play both sides. it's totally legit to clearly state just the harms. period

My head's not in writing mode but would quite like to tackle something on this. I love La Jetée, and I don't think I've ever written about it. Any old excuse to watch it again.

Still from Chris Marker's La Jetee

Still from Chris Marker's La Jetee

For so short a film, Chris Marker's La Jetée has a very long tail, one whose reach we can trace through Terminator, via 12 Monkeys and now Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die. (Did somebody say diminishing returns...)

A few days with the lurgy. Today I'm going to be very brave and once again venture out, for provisions - and as a test to see if I'm up for work tomorrow. Capitalism trains one so well.
