Melly Knits

A Daedalus Martin flyer and bobbin with fine grey singles (a naturally colored Cheviot). I intend to use the yarn for a 3-ply sock yarn. I was struggling with getting the tension right, so there are quite a few pigtails.

Today was the first day of #TourDeFleece , so there will be more spinning content for the next few weeks. I started off by attending the @darnknitanyway.bsky.social kickoff, and I spun fiber from @getbentzfarm.bsky.social , @mellyknits.bsky.social , and a blend I carded. #Handspinning 🧶

Any of the above! I mean, I *might* knit with it but when I was spinning it I put that out of my mind so it didn’t interfere with the freedom of just spinning to spin. It’s not currently in my radar to knit with, it’ll sit in my stash for a while and we will see! I give most of handspun away tho ;)

It was the only way I could spin it, I was getting super stuck in decision paralysis 😂

3 skeins of handspun yarn. One is a mini skein. The yarn is 3-ply and sport weight. There is a slight gold tint to it, from the 15% baby camel and 5% muga silk blended with white Corriedale.

Some hand dyed spinning fiber. It is a blend of Targhee, bamboo, and silk. The fiber is arranged in a spiral. The center is yellow, then blue and dark green.

A spinning project in progress. It is a single spun fairly finely on a wooden WooLee Winder bobbin. The current color is blue, but some bits of yellow are poking through underneath.

A plastic bin full of loose grey wool. It is a Finn fleece that has been picked open in preparation for carding.

I’ve been combo drafting the @bramble_ridge “Winter is For the Birds” box I got last year. There are 16 colours over a variety of bases. I’m closing my eyes and picking two braids at random to draft together for the singles, then doing a 2 ply. This is how the fourth one went

Lock popping some wool from last @mellyknits.bsky.social guts to get it ready to card. I’ve been super motivated after purchasing this nifty tool from @clemesandclemes at Maryland Sheep and Wool festival a couple weeks ago.

At the top is one bobbin of 2-ply yarn, with 3 storage bobbins with singles below it. The yarn is a blend of white Corriedale, baby camel, and muga silk. The camel and silk add a slight golden sheen

Two carded batts. The blend is mostly white Rambouillet. There are speckles of color courtesy sari silk and dyed silk boils. A touch of Firestar was included in the blend, but the resulting sparkle is not visible in the photo.

Two skeins of 2-ply handspun yarn using the same fiber, wheels, and ratios. The one on the left, which is a lighter brown, was spun from a woolen prep. The one on the right, which looks like it has more grey mixed in with the brown, was spun from a worsted prep.

The same two skeins after washing. They have puffed up a bit since before their bath.

A spinning project in progress. On the bottom left are two washed Corriedale locks. They are white, 6+ inches long, and have a lovely fine crimp. The shepherd (Marble Peaks Ranch) no longer raises sheep. The bottom right shows part of a drum-carded batt which has 80% of the Corriedale blended with 15% baby camel and 5% muga silk. The add-ins tinge the batt slightly golden. Along the top are 3 plastic storage bobbins with spun singles.
