Stars are disappearing before our eyes β€” and something in us is shifting For most of human history, the night sky has been a shared inheritance, a source of wonder. Now, more than a billion children see barely any stars in the night sky above their homes. So what does that...

'We are losing the stars. Not all at once, but quietly, one streetlight, one neon sign, one expanding suburb at a time.'

"There is a very real upside to using AI in the campaign. A Colombian presidential hopeful was shot last year while campaigning, and later died. This year, two candidates for Congress have been reported as missing days before the election."

It’s very hard to pick a single passage to give you a sense of just how fucked up this is.

The social world is an embodied world and therefore genAI can never do social science because it doesn’t have a body. Like Rocco the Rock genAI is not alive (Elmo, 2004), and as such it is an anti-human project.

One of the biggest successes of The War on Terror was recoding war as a form of global policing. There are no invasions, only actions; no enemies, only combatants; no countries, only jurisdictions. When there is no such thing as war, there's also no such thing as peace.

As someone who just recently learned the phrase "maxxing", I found this both fascinating and unsettling. It shows how incel slang seeps into mainstream talk and spreads fast. The casual misogyny baked into it isn't harmless - and demonizing women is flat-out toxic.

What if we insist on a vision for education that attends to the serious work of human presencing in a world in pain? What if pedagogical poetics becomes the reminder of intellectual integrity, with humility and vulnerability in pursuit of new-ness? How might we exist for one another, then?

A few replies have mentioned that the conservative hostility toward schools can be traced back to opposition to race and gender integration.

And yes. That’s exactly right.

Something violence researchers have warned for decades is that there is no neutrality in violence. Any violence that isn’t stopped escalates.

And we’re seeing that now as schools go from a space considered off-limits for violence to a space specifically targeted in war and genocide.

During my lifetime, the American conservative agenda has been preoccupied with expanding violence in schoolsβ€”and normalizing violence against children more broadly.

School shootings, campus sexual violence, bathrooms bans, ICE raids, and now bombing a girls’ school in Iran.

Difficult women, comfortable power When women refuse to soften their demands on violence, inequality and unpaid labour, the response is often to question their temperament rather than the broken system they are challenging.

As far as I know, farm archives have never really been used to track queer histories before. Given they mostly record the financial ongoings on a given farm, you can understand why. However, my year of research at The MERL has proved their potential.

The right to reclaim lost bodies: recovering evidence, memory and land in law and literature This paper argues for the right to reclaim lost bodies, understood through three interrelated dimensions: recovering evidence of destroyed bodies, rediscovering memories of Indigenous peoples erase...

I have been writing a lecture on reclaiming bodies, and I coincidentally came across this article by Marcus De Matos, where he states, "reclaiming lost bodies is a form of justice rooted in hope, hospitality and memory."

Many are appropriately outraged by Altman’s comments here implying that raising a human child is akin to β€œtraining” an AI model.

This is part of a broader pattern where AI industry leaders use language that collapses the boundary between human and machine.

UEFA and FIFA may get a red card at the ICC for ignoring Israeli violations A landmark referral of UEFA and FIFA leaders to the International Criminal Court could set an important legal precedent.

The ICC filing vs. the FIFA and UEFA Presidents is an opportunity to prove that international law still existsβ€”and that collaborators in Israel’s grievous crimes will actually be held to account.

This complaint must just be the beginning.

I read that this becomes illegal May 1st (mass no fault evictions), showing quite precisely in one awful example why known "cliff edges" for these kinds of rule changes are a deliberate political gift to the worst people ever.
