A wonderful weekend participating in Open House London 2025. So many people visited the gallery and heard Allies & Morrison talk about the project and see the lovely Time & Tide by Nicki Rolls. If you missed it, come next weekend!

an exhibit which consists of a bunch of flat cutouts of photos of legs attached in to a rod on a frame. there is a handle you can turn that makes them spin so they seem to kick or dance. another viewer stands on the left side, behind the piece is a shed with a ref roof and trees printed on the side

on one of my half-frame walks i swung by 'the artist's garden', an open-air gallery/art space on the roof of temple underground station. this exhibition of abstract sculptures was called "mary mary"

Nicki Rolls has just completed a two-year residency on the River Crane and adjacent Northcote Nature reserve, making observations from the diverse habitats that envelop the river and nature reserve.

Time & Tide invites reflection on our relationship with nature, resilience in the face of environmental stress, and the urgency of the climate crisis. As the old adage warns, “Time and tide wait for no man” – how will we respond, before it’s too late?

on the edge of survival and their dependence on the river. Her paintings evoke the wildness and reprieve offered by this green corridor within the city, while reflecting on the precarious balance that sustains it.

Using ink made from river water & local oak galls, linen buried under the riverbed and materials recovered from the river, Rolls infuses the work with the landscape’s physical presence. In depictions of plants that exist on its high embankments, she explores their precariousness,

Her charcoal drawings – marked by smudges, underdrawings, and fragile textures – render blemishes, broken stems & decaying leaves, record the stresses of living & ageing of the plant. She often includes tangled roots and soil remnants, revealing the struggle for survival as both beautiful & vital.

In Time & Tide, she explores wildflowers and weeds that live in inhospitable urban environments, celebrating these often overlooked plants through large-scale charcoal drawings, Rolls captures the physical and emotional character of plants often dismissed as weeds.
