When your transportation system is overwhelmingly structured around accommodating private vehicles, about a third of the botanical garden just winds up being a parking lot.

When you walk around downtown on the weekend or a holiday you really see how much dead, empty space is used for parking that could be used for housing or businesses.

The greatest family restaurant in Boise was Fort Street Station, and I’m still searching for a replacement.

Totally agree, we are extremely fortunate here when it comes to local journalism, and have been for years. The quality outpaces the size of the market.

3) Overconsumption of global news can be pretty detrimental to your mental health. It's not to have the worst happenings in the world beamed to your brain day after day.

4) There's a lot of sensationalism in journalism, even the "serious" kind, to get people's attention.

As a former newspaper journalist as well, I think all of this is true:
1) Journalism is important because it connects a community, and informs democratic actions.
2) A lot of journalism, present and past, functions basically as entertainment. It's piques your interest, but isn't essential.
