Electric bicycles, and shared electric bicycles in particular, are a revolutionary transportation technology. Forward-looking cities should be building out the infrastructure necessary to make cycling safe and convenient for everyone who wants to do it.

What a delight 8th street is.

Your periodic reminder that people thought it would be better to have cars driving through it.

Happy Parking Day! It’s wild to think of what you could do with all that space if you didn’t force parking on people.

In-N-Out's Ten Mile appeal rejected by Meridian City Council - BoiseDev If In-N-Out Burger wants to open a second Meridian location, it will have to look elsewhere. The California-based burger chain, which operates three locations in the Treasure Valley, had proposed anot...

Meridian built a transportation system that is almost exclusively for private vehicles, but now its denying building permits to businesses because they'll attract too many private vehicles?

Seems like In-N-Out is being punished for its success.

When your transportation system is overwhelmingly structured around accommodating private vehicles, about a third of the botanical garden just winds up being a parking lot.

When you walk around downtown on the weekend or a holiday you really see how much dead, empty space is used for parking that could be used for housing or businesses.

There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

One of the worst things about driving is other drivers. One of the best things about cycling is other cyclists.

Why building more homes near transit will transform lives across California | Opinion California cities have largely banned apartments and condos, preventing people from living near jobs and transit systems their taxes fund.

"I’m old enough to remember when teachers lived near schools and nurses near hospitals. That didn’t change because of their preferences β€” it changed because we banned the housing they could afford." calmatters.org/commentary/2...

August 1, 2025, marks the 81st anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. Poles all over the country and especially in the capital, Warsaw, spend the day remembering those who fought and died fighting against Nazi German occupation.

Rent prices are falling fast in America’s most pro-housing cities Rental prices in some of the country's largest cities are fallingβ€”some by almost 45 percent, according to new data.

Rents in Spokane are down 12% as a result of pro-housing legislation, like removing parking minimums, incentivizing housing on former parking lots, and upzoning all residential parcels.

Chinden Drainage and Design Study June 2025

Let them know what you think! They are soliciting feedback via an online "meeting" for their Chinden Drainage and Design Study, accessible here: arcg.is/1myKq90

I was a little surprised the interstate was still open with how close to the road it was. I was driving in from the east and it was a little ominous driving right toward a big column of smoke.

The First World War, in Sharp Focus An English chronicler of the trenches, and his wartime romance, captured in long-lost photographs.

During the First World War, Louis and Antoinette Thuillier created thousands of glass negatives containing photographs of soldiers. The digitized images are astonishingly clear: you can read the date of a newspaper folded on a lap.

Totally agree, we are extremely fortunate here when it comes to local journalism, and have been for years. The quality outpaces the size of the market.

3) Overconsumption of global news can be pretty detrimental to your mental health. It's not to have the worst happenings in the world beamed to your brain day after day.

4) There's a lot of sensationalism in journalism, even the "serious" kind, to get people's attention.

As a former newspaper journalist as well, I think all of this is true:
1) Journalism is important because it connects a community, and informs democratic actions.
2) A lot of journalism, present and past, functions basically as entertainment. It's piques your interest, but isn't essential.
