A study was done, saying the most boring person in the world is a data analyst whose hobbies include watching TV. Well, here I am. This is just for stuff I can’t say on LinkedIn. Mostly because I can’t say anything on LinkedIn.

I get it. It’s different. The performance doesn’t come close to Tableau though. I never had dedicate one neuron to refresh times with it. The exact same published report, calculations and all, takes less than 10 minutes to refresh there. Power BI? Almost an hour…with efficiencies.

I’m already using Measure Killer to rid unneeded columns in my M code. I’ve seen numerous YT videos, meetings with workspace admins, and my team has a weekly efficiency huddle with an in house subject matter expert.
I appreciate you reaching out, but this is just a place for me to yell into the wind

I was ending my posts with None of Which is Necessary in Tableau to emphasize all the f$&kery in Power BI that isn’t necessary with Tableau. I had to save character space so I invented my own acronym. Sorry for the confusion.

Believe it or not, I’m much happier with Power BI’s Visual tools over Tableau. Maybe that’s just due to lack of experience, but visually my PBI report is much more polished than the Tableau version.

Source is a single Table that I made in an SSMS user database. There’s an ETL pipeline that I made to load that daily, but nothing to do with PBI. Between 12 and 13 million rows (changes daily), 43 columns.
Can’t go into the kind of data (what’s being looked at) because I don’t want to self dox.

If you’ve read this far and have no idea what is going on, that’s ok. Its a summary of the work I’ve been doing over weeks to make something work in Power BI #Microsoft, That I didn’t have to do in Tableau all so my company can save some pocket change that will become a deficit on ramp up. Just dumb

Then I was told I would need a separate calendar table to handle all the date aggregations on the 5 different date fields in my source table. NOWINIT.

Then I was told I would need to amend my source table with the extra columns that the applied steps in power query populated and handle those calculations in the query that refreshes my source table instead of using Power Query and Power BI what they were fucking intended for. NOWINIT.

Then I was told I would need to covert all my filters to separate lookup tables and create many to one relationships to those columns in my source table. None of which is necessary in Tableau.

I was told I needed to implement incremental refresh requiring a start and end date parameter, a custom filter using those parameters on a date column with no nulls and another date column that populates today’s date when row data in the source table changes. None of which is necessary in tableau.

The F 500 company I work for will save a whopping 300k a year by switching from Tableau to Power BI. I’ve spent weeks trying to make my published report refresh like Tableau does out of the box. We were told by our admin if we want faster refreshes, we will have to buy our capacity.

An indicator I’m good at Power BI is when someone tries to recreate something I did and they can’t do it.

Five hours of my workday was spent arguing with Copilot on how to aggregate different date fields with a single calendar table in Power BI. I still didn’t get a solution. I’m actually as mad at it as I would be a person. In that way, it passes the Turing test

So how many people use Visual Studio, a batch file, and Task Scheduler as a workaround for not being able to schedule stored procedures ? No one huh?

I have extensive experience with Tableau and Power BI. Lemme tell ya one is like filet mignon and and the other is like sucking eggs. Guess what I’m eating right now? It isn’t steak.

Asking a lot of questions is a sign of intelligence. But at work it will make you look incompetent.
