Ah yes, I can see where we're both coming from with the two different definitions.

Right?? Highly recommend listening to the writers / creator eps of the HBO Succession Podcast, they go into great lengths on discussing their process of writing these wild, terrible, hateable and outrageous characters.

But the writers are hugely aware that these aren't protagonists; they're not glorifying them

Reminding me straight away of how they're in a billion-dollar negotiation with a company, and they're told they may have to get rid of their personal jets, and they're like "not the PJs!". A otal disconnect from any reality or actual consequence. These aren't protagonists, they're 100% assholes.

If anything, they're all antagonists whom we can see that we should stay clear of and display how immense access to power / monopolised power is in our society. Some traits people may empathise with but overall they're truly horrible, unlikeable people and portrayed as such

I don't think I agree with that - Succession isn't framing them as protagonists or heroes, they're framing them as incredibly unstable, messed up, deeply flawed white people who don't know anything but power. They're not people we're meant to empathise with.

@lenhaunts.bsky.social and I are currently writing up localisation notes for translators, and lemme tell ya, they are so DRY.

It's almost as if we're trying to deliver a stand-up routine loaded with deadpan zingers.

I have to admit my own ignorance here - I fit several of the categories called out under "People who are against the word Gaelic".

(It is wild, though, that the dialects of the language are so isolated despite the relatively short distance that I didn't even know they call it Gaelic in Ulster)

reminder that those who complain about people calling #Irish 'Gaelic', rarely do anything else for actual language rights (apart from bringing this up). it also shows their ignorance. they don't really care about the language...
