Consistency across classrooms turns "rules" into "norms." Calm insistence is the ultimate gift for your pupils' focus.

New Year; Same Routines The spring term always arrives with a particular kind of energy. Children return from the Christmas break a little taller, a little louder and often slightly out of rhythm. This isnโ€™t a problem to be solved; itโ€™s simply part of the cycle. What matters is how quickly we help pupils rediscover the habits that make learning possible. This is where…

Back to the Beat: Why the Basics Still Win I was listening to an episode of the Beyond Good podcast with Femi Adeniran and Matt Findlay titled โ€œMy Daughterโ€™s Drum Lessonsโ€ on the way to work this week. There are a number of points that are worth listening to in this pod, so please do give it a listen, here: What stood out to me, was the reflection that, almost by accident, a sizeable body of work has been built up.

Less Is More: Rethinking How We Teach Writing in KS1 If you spend any time in a primary classroom, youโ€™ll notice something curious about how we teach writing. By the end of Year 2, children have often been asked to produce stories, letters, instructions, fact-files, recounts, poems, posters, diaries and sometimes even play-scripts. The list is endless, and a little exhausting. So I ask: why do we teach so many genres so early on?

Having both myself and my wife in education is a blessing ๐Ÿชฝand a curse ๐Ÿ‘น
๐Ÿชฝ - school holidays & weekends together, understand each otherโ€™s successes and stresses โ€ฆ the list goes on
๐Ÿ‘น - watching her go through inspections. This week is CSI - am I the only one that feels the CSI outdated?

YES! Any display where every child cannot see whatโ€™s written is useless. Then if people use posters etc. from places like Twinkl, put them up and do nothing with them - expecting chn to just read and learn by osmosis - are just putting up glorified wallpaper

Too Much on the Walls = Too Little in Their Heads? Walk into many classrooms today and youโ€™ll see walls bursting with posters, anchor charts, word walls, motivational quotes, and student masterpieces. Iโ€™ve been there myself - creating a map of Middle Earth when reading The Hobbit as a display board, and making a 3D display to entice children when creating writing inspired by โ€˜The Mysteries of Harris Burdickโ€™ by Chris van Allsburg.

Yeah I can see that, so edging more towards a reflective tool for practice; a way to improve the teaching of that concept next time round, as much as a recording of evidence. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ’ฏ agree. Responsive assessment benefits may mean that these arenโ€™t โ€™locked inโ€™, but fluid based on need. Where whole class checking is complete, you could formalise recording, but issues need addressing in the moment. Iโ€™d question impact of writing it down if it gets corrected?

Feedback โ€“ Be Kind, Be Specific, Beย Helpful Weโ€™ve explored the importance of the environment, attention and the working memory. For new learning to stick, we need to ensure that we are constantly checking for understanding, and most importantly, providing the right feedback after weโ€™ve worked out what the children do and do not know. Feedback is one of the most powerful tools we have in education. Done well, it accelerates learning, builds motivation and helps children refine their thinking.

Working Memory โ€“ Navigating theย Bottleneck As we head into the first full week back, schools have hit the ground running delivering their lessons to pupils, and parents at home (if youโ€™re anything like me!) are breathing a sigh of relief for the routing and normality! Attention โ€“ The Gatekeeper ofย Learning As we get closer to the new term; new academic year, here's the second blog around how we support children learning. I hope you find it useful. Nah, you'd sort the foundations first, make sure every brickโ€™s where it should be, and fix any gaps before the roof goes on. Well, assessment in the classroomโ€™s the same โ€” it's not a flashy end-of-year event, itโ€™s the brick-by-brick work we do every single day to help children build something strong and lasting.
