In retrospect, the Investigations games are a very strange era of the Ace Attorney series. Even around the time of its release AAI's existence seemed kind of ludicrous – a third-person spinoff where Edgeworth is a little guy who runs around and solves murders?? This has never stopped being weird even over a decade and a sequel and an HD rerelease later. The Ace Attorney series decided to shake up its format precisely twice and then decided that was enough and to never do it again. The Investigations duology takes place over the course of several eventful weeks in March and April 2019 during which time Miles Edgeworth is practically solving a murder a day. His Mystery-Solving Gimmick in a world full of supernatural truth-telling abilities is using basic logic in the first game, and then in the second game he starts imagining debates as chess matches. Ace Attorney Investigations is a fairly dry crime conspiracy narrative and Investigations Two: Prosecutor's Gambit is one of the best mystery games of all time.

While Miles Edgeworth's role in Ace Attorney Investigations was to be put into as many Situations as possible, his role in Ace Attorney Investigations Two is to bear witness to an elaborate chain of crimes between his narrative foils and go Damnnn That's Crazyyy We Need Systematic Reform while occasionally imagining conversations as chess matches. Edgeworth's arc in this game is primarily concerned with the question of whether he should give up being a prosecutor and become a defense attorney. You might have thought he already figured that out during the trilogy, but oh buddy he hasn't even gotten started yet. Whatever emotional journey he went through in Europe while faking his own death is nothing compared to this. Because this time what it's really about is how to seek justice within a corrupt system. You might have thought he already figured that out in the first Investigations game but oh buddy he hasn't even gotten started yet. Circumventing Quercus Alba's extraterritorial rights by calling his boss and getting him fired is nothing compared to this because this time what it's REALLY all about is defying your father's legacy to forge your own path. Man this game is so good.
