There isn't one single reason that people do things in politics. There are many: money, greed, selfishness, power, mental illness, insecurity and paranoia, imperialism and delusions of grandeur, etc. The other side of the coin when politics are positive are: progress, equity, justice, improvement...

I suspect that most republicans, when they first begrudgingly held their noses and decided to side with Trump early on willingly and voluntarily ceded their power and responsibility to the poster boy who they believed would achieve their libertarian and neoliberal fantasies.
