Is it possible that basing school funding on test scores, doing less than nothing about school shootings, threatening teachers for respecting their students’ identities, and generally not giving a flying fuck about safety in a global pandemic could cause anxiety just as much as the damn screens?

Agreed! I was actually surprised at how much I loved Ghostroots too. If you have the chance, and are into Nigerian ghost stories, it’s a great collection.

I hope your martyr! hold comes in soon. It was the closest to James for that kind of award-worthiness, imo.

It was another great season of reading and being introduced to new authors and diverse perspectives, which is truly my favorite part of National Book season.

Fiction - Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar — it’s down to this one and James by Percival Everett. Both were among the best I’ve read all year. And both are deserving. Martyr! gets my pick because it’s the one I’m most excited to re-read.
