And an older woman in the seminar said, "I'm never having children, after seeing that," to which I replied, "But you have two children." "Yes but I didn't know it looked like THAT!"

When I was at Korea University in a grad seminar I miscalculated the DVD and instead of playing the Brakhage film I intended I played Window Water Baby Moving. One student, a 24 year old man, fainted.

Arrived yesterday. I would like to thank all our dazzling contributors, everyone at Edinburgh University Press who saw us through the stages, Aaron Gerow for his generous endorsement, and most of all, David Desser for his guidance, generosity and commitment.

Glad to see Pazuzu is keeping up with times - this is a terrific adaptation of product placement. Literally placing yourself in the product.

Bringing Kinoshita Keisuke to Light The omission of Keisuke distorts the international picture of Japanese film history and impoverishes the options for a fuller appreciation its legacy.

EUP gave me a guest blog spot for our book The Cinema of Kinoshita Keisuke. Films of Joy and Sorrow. euppublishingblog.com/2025/08/14/b...

PS. It's interesting it's changed to a Tamil language film instead of Hindi - perhaps to avoid the anti-Muslim fervor Hindu nationalists of the north.

That is horrorific. In the 18th-Century in France they sometimes stages Shakespeare's tragedies with a rewritten last act where Romeo & Juliet live, Lear gets rescued, etc. Not a model to emulate of course.

Apologies for the double posting. EUP just sent me this banner for the 30percent discount, with the very generous words of Professor Aaron Gerow, for which David and I are deeply grateful

Very happy to see Arrow's September release, Proof of the Man (Sato Jun'ya 1977) that includes my video introduction to the film (Thank you to Jasper Sharp and Sarah Appleton for filming and editing it). The film stars Matsuda Yusaku and Okada Mariko. It is a rare look at issues of race in Japanese films of this time. Both in terms of people of color in Japan and US attitudes to the Japanese. I point out that this film about racial secrets had its own secret - Matsuda's Korean heritage. I discuss that in my Asian Movie Pulse essay on Matsuda. Sato is one of the most important Yakuza directors at Toei and is responsible for one of the best Jitsuroku films ever, 実録 私設銀座警察 [Private Ginza Police].
In the comments I provide a link to the Arrow official full description of the bluray and a link to my Matsuda Yusaku essay.
A big thank you to Jasper Sharp for giving me this opportunity.

Kurahara Koreyoshi's younger brother Kurahara Koretsugu was a pioneer in the Nikkatsu Roman Porno form. Jasper Sharp and I did a joint commentary on one of his early works, Sex Rider Wet Highway, for 88 Films, to be released in July. Link to full details in comments.

Also in the case of streaming, no physical object has crossed a border.

I'm not a Murakami fan at all, but I have always admired Underground and taught it the year it came out in English. That really important writing. I'm glad it's getting attention again.

Watching any British spy drama shows the CIA as an unwelcome guest at best and another threat at worst. At worst is more frequent too.

There have been 5 film versions of Gate of Flesh, the most famous now being Suzuki Seijun's 1964 version, which is a classic. But Gosha's version has its own terrible brilliance - the set design, the acting are searing in their hypnotic intricate horror and the sense of an apocalypse is palpable. Gosha's addition of an unexploded bomb embedded in the women's headquarters makes it especially catastrophic. Nattori Yuko is glorious in this film and Watase Tsunehiko is incandescent.
I am so grateful to be part of Jasper Sharp's mission to get this fantastic and important film into the market and canon beyond Japan.

88 Films is releasing Gate of Flesh (Gosha Hideo 1988) in June. I filmed a video introduction to the film while I was in London. My thanks to Jasper Sharp, producer, Sarah Appleton, cinematography, and Hugo Wu for styling.
