This is a case study in billionaires having too much influence: they replace taxes on their income with taxes on us buying essentials.
We need to tax billionaires – before they tax us!

Can AI ever be ethical? Our supporters told us that they don't trust AI much and development should be slowed and regulated – but half still support use in the public interest.

The UK's land is owned by a tiny number of people – just 1% of the population own 70% of land. Huge amounts of public land have been sold off since the 70s and the price of land has skyrocketed, encouraging the housing and climate crises and hurting our entire society.

#Inequality affects us across all stages of our life, but most prominently during #childhood.

Aini Gauhar @equalitytrust.bsky.social writes that only policies targeted at redistributing wealth and opportunities can level the playing field from the outset @lseinequalities.bsky.social.

A quote from the article by Aini Gauhar that reads "In precolonial southern California, a person’s death was followed by the death of their wealth. Clothes, riches and other possessions passed to dust, not the next of kin. In Britain today, this concept seems unthinkable. Wealth outlives us all."

Once, wealth was buried as grave goods. Today all billionaires under 30 inherited their wealth. How does that affect society? Our research officer writes for @lseinequalities.bsky.social

The UK’s one of richest economies, yet 4.5m children are in poverty, most people are a pay check or two away from destitution and just 50 families own 50% of the resources. Yes, we must tax wealth, also increase taxation on higher incomes. Best fix: the people rise up and expropriate the rich.

The UK funnels incredible amounts of wealth into the pockets of the super rich. They buy essential services, hike bills, pollute, and make billions renting our country back to us. That's why we need to make them pay.

To achieve both, we must drastically reduce #inequality, writes @profkepickett.bsky.social @equalitytrust.bsky.social on @lseinequalities.bsky.social.

Instead of taxing the super-rich, our Government would rather:
❌Cut disability benefits
🛢️Subsidise the oil and gas companies profiting from our bill hikes
👩‍⚕️Risk the collapse of public services we all depend on

The Government must choose to #MakeThemPay.

The chancellor is talking about deregulating the big banks and hoping that growth will trickle down – but has that ever worked? Economists say no. Instead, it created big profits for the richest, but the gaps between the richest and the rest of grew enormously.
