A strategy based on 'well, what if everything political science tells us, everything economics tells us and everything history tells us is wrong?' is ending in a predictable fashion.

If you want to prevent crime, eliminate poverty. If you want to prevent violent crime, eliminate poverty and provide universal healthcare. Emma Goldman was almost right when she said every society has the criminals it deserves. In reality, every society has the criminals it creates.

Being "tough on crime" is just a call for deterrence. And study after study has shown that deterrence doesn't work, except to sate society's demand for vengeance, to treat "criminals" cruelly. And THAT isn't even deterrence at all. It's retribution, and it precludes rehabilitation.

The perils of centrist economics in a polarised world | Kenneth Rogoff A decade ago, a prominent analysis was falsely cast as a call for austerity. Our real offence was suggesting there might be a trade-off between debt and growth

For sure the hate responses to Rogoff are deplorable. But he is quite fond of dismissive polemic - β€˜crude’ Keynesianism anyone? A crucial question is how debt is used? Investment for growth? Better public services to make people productive? Or tax cuts for rich?

No shame, no opprobrium: racism is priced in now. Of all the right’s victories, this one has been critical | Jason Okundaye In this age of Tory nativism and Faragist populism, the question isn’t β€˜is this person a bigot?’ Now it is β€˜does that matter at all?’ says Guardian writer Jason Okundaye

Depressingly spot on analysis of how racism has moved from being something abhorred at least in principle to an explicit trope of mainstream politicians and media. This is a crucial aspect of an even deeper betrayal of Enlightenment values. Equality is spurned

Keir Starmer shouldn't wait until the likely fiasco of the May local elections. If he has any concern for party and country, he should step aside now, giving his successor as long as possible to undo the damage of his disastrous premiership and restore hope in politics.
