Plea for fairer access to higher and postgraduate education, on practical as well as principled grounds. Wish it would be heard by todayβs philistine know nothing politicians
A strategy based on 'well, what if everything political science tells us, everything economics tells us and everything history tells us is wrong?' is ending in a predictable fashion.

Emma Goldman was almost right when she said every society has the criminals it deserves. In reality, every society has the criminals it creates.

And study after study has shown that deterrence doesn't work, except to sate society's demand for vengeance, to treat "criminals" cruelly. And THAT isn't even deterrence at all. It's retribution, and it precludes rehabilitation.

For sure the hate responses to Rogoff are deplorable. But he is quite fond of dismissive polemic - βcrudeβ Keynesianism anyone? A crucial question is how debt is used? Investment for growth? Better public services to make people productive? Or tax cuts for rich?
www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Sad to see erstwhile bastions of liberals indeed of social democracy falling under right wing if not fascist control. Is it follow the money - the declining living standards and insecurity of most people being blamed on powerless scapegoats? Or deeper mass panic?
www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Depressingly spot on analysis of how racism has moved from being something abhorred at least in principle to an explicit trope of mainstream politicians and media. This is a crucial aspect of an even deeper betrayal of Enlightenment values. Equality is spurned

Many condemn the odious current Labour policies and past present and proposed Right wing proposals as utterly unjust. But how can a leftist notion of justice be grounded? I have long turned to Rawls, summarised here

The ultra rich contribute disproportionately to carbon emissions but also control media and politicians. Debate about net zero is rigged in their favour.

Illuminating analysis of how ordinary people contribute to horrendous outcomes because war conditions focus attention on the here and now survival requirements, curtaining off any broader consequences

The ideas that flourish in mainstream economics and policy making are those that pamper the rich and turn a blind eye to inherent instability and injustice of capitalism

This reveals the limitations of the term populism. Assimilating Left and Right presumably because both reject financial orthodoxy ignores their polar opposite aims. The Right benefit the wealthy behind populist rhetoric. The Left prioritise the many not the few

Democracy in danger as the dominant parties exacerbate the economic insecurity of the majority, shielded by media scapegoating of minorities not the culpable minority- the super rich. Can people begin to believe their own eyes rather than billionaire propaganda?
Keir Starmer shouldn't wait until the likely fiasco of the May local elections. If he has any concern for party and country, he should step aside now, giving his successor as long as possible to undo the damage of his disastrous premiership and restore hope in politics.
