I will never forget my first SEPM Field Trip and Conference, nor the beer sag wagon…and its effects on the outcrop debates as the day wore on.
Best field trip ever.
Shit. Just realized I have a son in prime draft age.

Cannot reply directly to post…but I have used these for closeup photography of microorganisms.
I think the trick is getting less than a full case of them…they aren’t cheap but are surprisingly clear for plastic.

I knew one of the scientists at NOAA that stood up to Trump during the SharpieGate debacle. He retired a hero during the Biden Admin.
It sorrows me that it takes 100x that effort to stand up to the crazy in Trump2 era. Many EPA, NOAA staff reeling with insane budget cuts, furloughs, morale hits.
It is notable to remember that our parents did not live the way we do now…with every free moment spent in the pursuit of making a living, the demands of modern administrative/bureaucratic systems, and the fretting about politics.
Simpler times mean more enjoyable times.

When I bought the shrimp…the store attendant said… “I think there are some ostrocods that got into the bag…is that OK?”
“Okay? Hell yeah that’s OK!
Remembering to stop to think, make a bad poem, listen to a favorite song, enjoy something beautiful, read something of interest, draw up a plan or list of things to do someday is an act of defiance in these times.
These are luxuries that are affordable and which can be done in small bits of time.

Five “Gold Tetras” showing coloring of silver, gold, blue and red…depending on direct lighting and viewing angle. Large. Hunk of Java Moss on the wood provides a place to explore…and more.
#Tetras are amazing in their diversity and beauty. There seem to be a thousand niches they fill, and highly adapted to them.
These Gold Tetra reportedly have a symbiotic bacteria that lives under their scales that give them their shiny silver or gold color.

Wait, what year is this?
Had someone just say they are challenged by giving a presentation to a screen instead of live faces in person!

26.02.2026 16:30 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Quite welcome. What a contrast between 1987 and today. The 1987 trip was a small scientific conference that I crashed…mostly volcanologists from the CVO, but also biologists and geomorphs. There were so few signs of recovery at the time that they were pointed out individually in the blast zone!

What is life if spent in thinking
What if life is spent in the attempt
To discover what life’s all about
Nothing but a life of contempt
I will spend my life in ease
I promise to never break a sweat
All my mental capacity shrinking
As I increase my reliance yet
I have a Cray at my side
To remind me that my mind’s not fit
To tell me all I need to do
To tell me how to do it
I’ve no need for remembering
I’ve shed all need for thought
I am happier in my newfound luxury
I am happy to follow the bot
A turning around, of sorts.

Bottom dwellers are #biofilm experts ( #shrimp ), bottom rakers/muck stirrers (Corydoras) and #algae suckers (Ottocinclus) and play an important part in the balanced (artificial) habitat encased in glass.
But #snails do their part too!

Where you are, is getting starts to take off easy?
In the PNW…it’s often wet enough and weather mostly hospitable…but it’s been getting tougher with the extreme heat events.
The Dawn Redwood and others I place on gravel and let the roots grow down through the base.
