What Happens When Socialists Are in Charge? Portland Offers a Glimpse.

I actually live in Portland, and there are no actual socialists in charge here, @nytimes.com. I'd say "do better," but you don't seem to be interested in that. πŸ₯²

Image of children's picture book titled There Doesn't Have to be a Reason by MC Kasper. A cartoon bear is sitting on the ground facing away so the bear's back and tail are shown. The bear's head is turned and it is looking over its shoulder towards the viewer with a small smile. The bear is also waving its left paw. The smile and the wave make the bear seem friendly.

Finishing up work for Notable Small Press Books of 2025 #100smallpress and looking back on some of the picture books I read, including There Doesn’t Have to be a Reason by MC Kasper @catalystpress.bsky.social (animal facts + body positivity = cute story).

Image of the book cover for the children's picture book Rus and Moose by Chuchu Wang. An illustrated image looking out through the windshield of the cab of a big rig truck. In the left hand driver's seat is a man in a white t-shirt and sunglasses with short, black hair and pink skin and a stubbly beard who is holding the steering wheel. In the right hand passenger seat is a moose with a large head and wide eyes and a slight smile who is looking at the driver. Between the moose and the driver are the dials, knobs, buttons, and screens of the dashboard. Along the bottom edge are wildflowers and grass intruding into the mechanical environment and reminding the viewer of the moose's natural habitat (which is not usually a big rig).

Another book I read for the Notable Small Press Books of 2025 #100smallpress project was Rus and Moose by Chuchu Wang from Restless Books. The illustrations are exuberant and wonderful, plus info about the life of a long haul trucker (and his friend who is a moose).

Image of the cover of the children's picture book Good Morning, Space by Linda Bondestam translated from the Swedish by A. A. Prime. Most of the image depicts a room with a dark blue wall and floor. There is a window with the top half covered by a shade with a pattern of green diamonds. Through the bottom of the window we can see outer space with pinpoint stars and a pink planet with a blue ring around it. Two pink blob aliens are floating around the planet. Under the window on the floor is a digital clock that reads 04:05. In front of the window is a child with blue skin and shoulder length straight hair. The child is wearing sky blue pajamas covered with fluffy white clouds. The child is holding something up to their right eye to look out the window at the planet and the floating aliens. Peaking out from the left side of the child is a small green alien with yellow eyes on stalks above its head. On the right side of the room are two more aliens. One alien is a green blob with two antenna that have yellow stars on the ends. The other alien is a pink blob with yellow eyes on stalks.

Yet another book I read for the Notable Small Press Books of 2025 #100smallpress project was Good Morning, Space by Linda Bondestam translated from the Swedish by AA Prime from Restless Books. The illustrations tumble in a riot of color and action and space aliens with one very stubborn child.

Image of the cover of the children's picture book Prisons Must Fall by Mariame Kaba and Jane Ball, illustrated by Olly Costello, and published by Haymarket Books. The title, Prisons Must Fall appears in orange against a black night sky studded with white dots to indicate stars. Six ribbon streamers in bright colors wave up from the ground into the black sky. At the bottom of the image is the top of a gray stone wall. There are four simplified human figures on the wall. One figure, dressed in yellow, sits on the left end of the wall and leans back supported by their arm. To the right of that figure is a figure dressed in orange supported by a walking cane in one hand and holding aloft a tambourine. To the right of that figure is a figure dressed in green raising one arm and one leg as if dancing. And on the right end of the wall is a figure dressed in pink with their hair in a pony tail who is also raising one arm and one leg as if dancing.

The government is in full shutdown and the Republicans are refusing to call the House back into session.

Want to know why?

Because we have secured the final vote on releasing the Epstein Files and they don’t want it out.

Call GOP and tell them to swear in @adelitaforcongress.bsky.social.

ER doc here! This is a lie. Wait times are up because the American healthcare system is an unsustainable business model and a for-profit national healthcare system just doesn’t work. These problems will continue to get worse until we change that system. It literally has nothing to do with immigrants

They found 38 unmarked graves of Indigenous children at Immaculate Conception Mission in South Dakota and it didn't make the news outside of Indian Country.

The government is officially shut down. Make no mistake: Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. This is THEIR shutdown. They had every tool to govern and chose chaos instead. The American people are the ones paying the price.

To be clear, saying you're going to "avoid politics" is an INCREDIBLY political statement, especially in an age of fascism.

Showing up to work to avoid a shutdown is apparently a minimum threshold Republicans can’t be bothered to meet.

The president just gathered the highest ranking officers in the military to tell them that he may order them to kill American citizens -- and that they better follow his orders. All in response to a series of crises that have no basis in reality.

I don't know how to yell any louder.
