At the end of the day, donโ€™t we all just want a bookshelf with a rolling ladder?

Agreed! Too often have I observed teachers play the audiobook in class without scaffolding the listening skills required just so that they can say their students โ€œread the chapter that day in class.โ€ Listening should be thought of as a skill worth nurturing, not a given to be ignored.

From an educatorโ€™s perspective, I canโ€™t say in good conscience that listening to an audiobook is the same as reading. Whether it โ€œcountsโ€ depends on how semantic those around you are and the context of the situation. Studies have said that listening comprehension is the same as reading comprehension for easier-to-understand texts, but anything beyond what you immediately understand on the first pass is better suited for print reading. Audiobooks let you skip over the process of decodingโ€”turning print symbols into words with meaningโ€”and require less engagement. There are more opportunities for your mind to wander, because an audiobook playing is something that happens to you, and print reading is something you have to actually do.

Libraries feel like something about which we could very easily be saying, โ€œRemember that place where you could borrow books, for FREE, and return them when you were finished?โ€ And kids would say โ€œWhat?? No way!โ€ And yet there they still are, despite everything weโ€™ve become, existing. Remarkable.

Latest book haul. In my house, we donโ€™t call it CRT. We call it history, and we learn about the things that define us as people.
