Agreed! Too often have I observed teachers play the audiobook in class without scaffolding the listening skills required just so that they can say their students “read the chapter that day in class.” Listening should be thought of as a skill worth nurturing, not a given to be ignored.

From an educator’s perspective, I can’t say in good conscience that listening to an audiobook is the same as reading. Whether it “counts” depends on how semantic those around you are and the context of the situation. Studies have said that listening comprehension is the same as reading comprehension for easier-to-understand texts, but anything beyond what you immediately understand on the first pass is better suited for print reading. Audiobooks let you skip over the process of decoding—turning print symbols into words with meaning—and require less engagement. There are more opportunities for your mind to wander, because an audiobook playing is something that happens to you, and print reading is something you have to actually do.
