Rom the Spaceknight

John Byrne: There are two kinds of designs that make the best logos. The first is instantly recognizable at a distance, the second is instantly readable. The original FANTASTIC FOUR logo is a prime example of the first. Too busy to be readable except up close, but immediately obvious. The best example of the second is the original ROM logo. I was walking down a street in Brooklyn Heights once, and looking ahead was able to read it clearly on a spinner rack in a bodega a block away. Logos took a severe turn for the worse when the production department started TYPING them. I prefer the bounce of hand lettering.
