SlumberTown 🌵⭐

Lester, half-drunk, probably having trouble processing the stimulating environment: "So'z... uhh. It don't matter if we get it right? *hic*..." The compass man leans deviously over his stand. "Oh, !Que tonto eres! You should DEFINITELY get it right. Or I'll make sure you suffert he consequences. He appearances underneath Boone's face, pointing a finger upwards. "WHAT consequences, I hear you ask?" He points his finger off to the side, underneath Echo's chin, "That's yet to be determined! But I'll give you a hint..." He hangs upside down over Romy, both fingers pointed together, "Don't answer WRONG, and you won't suffer them!" As he waltzes away on the stage, Lester takes a swig of his booze and says, "... I'll sit this'n out, thanks." Compass man: "!EQUIVADO! Now who's ready to play for a way? Let's get started!"

... and the rules of the gameshow are very simple! Even if the participants don't seem exactly eager to play...

The compass man regards the group. "Now. You've all got somewhere you need to go. And I, the All-Knowing Compass, have valiantly arrived in your time of need!" Echo gives him a bored look. "Sure. Okay. Just point us in the right direction, 'O Valiant One." Compass man, in excited shock: "The right... DIRECTION?" He then begins to dance and sway, revealing several signs and cave entrances behind him, while his purple bow tie extends into a scarf with arrows pointed at the ends. "Why - there's SO MANY WAYS to choose from! But none of you nincompoops seem to know where you're going. So very lost, it seems! !Que triste!"

The page composition has Boone, Echo and Romy's faces stacked in profile on one side, while the compass man looks down at them thoughtfully from the other side. Echo: "Of COURSE we know where we're going! We're looking for Alex. Any idea where he's gone." "Alex, hm? Looking for him before you look for yourselves? Que triste indeed." He beams condescendingly with his hands on his hips, while Echo continues digging at him. "... look. It's a straight-forward request. Are you gonna help us out or not?" The compass man starts wiggling his noodle arms in a playful and crazed manner bordering on uncanny. "Si, si. I think I can show you a way. But first... a game we must play!" Echo forces a sheepish smile. "... must we?"

The compass's large, mitted hand swipes Boone's bell collar out of his hoof. Boone: "HEY... !" With the light source gone, the group is now in the dark again, their eyes giving expressions of shock, confusion and anxiety. The mitted hand flips a light switch, and suddenly, Boone, Echo, Lester and Romy are all transported onto a flashy gameshow stage with blaring rainbow lights and purple decor. All of them are in color coded sparkly costumes with top hats and bowties and suits, and color-coded stands, all with their names on them. Boone is in red, Echo is in blue, Lester is in yellow, and Romy is in green. Compass Man, off-screen, in a singsongy voice: "TA-DAAAAAAA!"

An establishing shot sets the scene further, as we see the compass man standing on a piece of floating stage floor, looking down upon the four of them from their stands, which are all loosely tethered to long teetering structures of rock that seem to extend far down into a dark void below. Compass ManL "Bienvenida, dreamers, cave dwellers, and stinky smellers! Today we shall play:" *a screen in the background displays "What's My Way?". "Here's how it works..." The compass man explains the rules into a microphone while the four gameshow contestants are tossed around on their spiraling rock towers. "I ask you a question. You ANSWER the question. HOW you answer determines the WHERE that you go! Simple, ?si?"

It's time for... a gameshow?

They do have sentient plants like Kumo as pets in the Slumberverse! That one card game had some Pokemon inspo for sure. Cutetus has a bit of pikachu (maybe bidoof?) aura lowkey. XD

Anyway, thanks as always for reading SlumberTown! And for those who support it, thank you so much for going the extra mile to do that too. It feels amazing to have something this special, and to share it with the world with every new update, every Monday~

And I'm always forever grateful for the people who read it. The old readers, the new readers, even the future ones who may have yet to read it at all. It may not feel like a lot sometimes, but I know people read it and that it touches hearts too. I remind myself of that all the time.

And with every anniversary that passes, even if I'm just kinda trying to survive and get through hard times, it's something I can feel really happy about. It's this thing and this passion I can care about despite everything. I love everything about it and what's come out of it.

It's something that incentives me to live, to keep going beyond the bend, to strive for a better future - even when the present feels hopeless and despairing. Creating the comic has been a form of resilience too. In ways I could never expect back in 2019 haha.

At the end of the day, I make this comic for one reason, and it's because it's fun, and because it means something to me! But I can't ever forget that former point. SlumberTown is a comic I use to explore serious topics, but it's also something that's FUN... something that should always BE fun!

As in, I'm currently on medical leave for a surgery I've been trying to get for the past few years as well. And even though times are really hard, both in my personal life and the world at large, SlumberTown remains a constant thing that brings me comfort and anchors me in a way I'm grateful for.

I used to write long thoughtful posts with every comic anniversary, but through the years of making SlumberTown, I've gone through some really rough times - often times that didn't give me a lot of space to breathe, let alone reflect! This year I have a little bit of that due to the timing.

When I was thinking about it, in a way, Labyrinth is like the Johto Journeys equivalent of the SlumberTown series whole. Which is to say, there's a whole new world to see - but there's still so many books I hope to create in the coming years!

Boone and Romy look up at Les in a panel framed between his legs. Romy waves in a friendly way, but Boone grimaces slightly, "Ah. Hey, Les." Lester points to them accusingly. "Didn't ya see the sign? It says 'No Trespassin'. *hic*." Boone looks over at a sign behind him that says "Yield" with a walking pedestrian on it. He looks back at Les. "It says 'Yield to Pedestrians'." Lester looks genuinely shocked. "HEH?!" He walks off drunkenly. ".... so it seems. Guess yer off the hook then. But only for today."

Echo cracks open a soda that says Diet O: Bloody Good! She, Romy and Boone are then seen sitting at a round table, playing a card game. Romy is sitting next to a silly looking cactus with a face on it. Echo, boredly: "Okay... your turn, Boone." Romy looks down at the cards in their paws and starts sweating. 'Oh, geez. I'm still not sure I understand the rules of this game. But it's kinda too late to ask for clarification. Right?" The cards include characters such as Dark Blacktus, King Cactus, Protractus and Cutetus. 'L-let's see... these numbers have gotta mean something..." Boone concentrates on the cards in his hooves. "Hmmm..." He slams down a card that says 'Smacktus' featuring a cactus with boxing gloves. "Ah-HA! An old friend appears!" Echo: "Really... ? How is it that you always end up-" Boone smacks Echo in the face with the googly-eyed cactus, while Romy dodges out of the way. "HAH! Talk backtus, get SMACKTUS!!!"
