Hi Ciara, I certainly wouldn't be happy signing off that it's the students own work. As far as I know the ASTI have some motions around that for the annual conference. It's a bit unfair to put all of this monitoring on our shoulders. It's a huge shift from being"on the students side" so to speak.

2 flasks in a water bath at almost 30 degrees Celsius. One flask has sugar, yeast and water.

Testing the vapour from a fermentation flask with a cheap alcohol breath tester. Gave a result of 1.5 g/l and a satisfying danger beeping sound.
It's difficult to get a positive result in the iodoform test for small quantities of alcohol. Each group got a beep so everyone is happy.

Garden flowers such as hydrangea or pelargonium work well. Boiled in water this time but you could also crush in ethanol giving a faster more concentrated extract.
