The book LONG EYE poems by KWOYA FAGIN MAPLES. Has a watery cover with a whale swimming between algae or upside down trees and clouds?

A poem by Kwoya Maples:

Owed to the Atlantic
I began in you, spat you out once born.
You cover three-fourths of the earth and own three-fourths of my body.
You grin, exuberant with truth. So easily I could be in your belly, limbs in
sprawled like an ocean spider, recovered.

AWP haul part 3: Kwoya Maples, one of my favorite local poets and a coworker at UA, released her second book at AWP! I was around while she wrote this, basically sending her related memes (Gemini/Gemini Moon communication), and I’m so proud of her. From @hubcitypress.bsky.social

The book industry is doom and gloom these days but at @hubcitypress.bsky.social, sales are up 30% over last year because of three national awards for two weird, short novels. Good things still happen to books, y'all. (Also, a reminder to publish what you love and not only what you think might sell.)

Set in the mid-90s South Texas, Daytona Teddy Riggs follows a has-been high school football star on his quest to become the world's strongest man. At once an outrageous comedy, abiding satire of the self-help industry, and an Earnest look at the facets of obsession, buxton's riotous debut novel Chronicles how masculinity, privilege, and mental illness interact.

"small talk"
The coffee was good. The morning is still
young. I am making eye contact with the red dog
as he shits under a pink magnolia tree.

People on the internet inform me that this
(the shitting, with the sustained eye contact)
is a demonstration of animal trust, is vulnerability
in its most practical iteration: a question.

Will you come watch me while I write these poems?
Can I bear to let you see me change?

Pink blooms fall around the red dog.
February is April in Alabama.

I am trying to remember I have something to say.

ala/yalsa alex award winner teen readers and adult books. plum by andy anderegg

The Alex Awards are given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18. The winning titles are selected from the previous year's publishing. The Alex Awards were first given annually beginning in 1998 and became an official ALA award in 2002.

The award is sponsored by the Margaret A. Edwards Trust. Edwards pioneered young adult library services and worked for many years at the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore. Her work is described in her book Fair Garden and the Swarm of Beasts, and over the years she has served as an inspiration to many librarians who serve young adults. The Alex Awards are named after Edwards, who was called β€œAlex” by her friends.
