Today's announcement will put untrained and unaccountable members of the military in an untenable position in our communities. Itβs unnecessary, unwarranted, & a dangerous escalation of power in the Nationβs Capital simply because he can.

Over the last two years, DC has experienced a 52% drop in violent crime and is now at a 30-year low. While any crime is one too many, every local leader in DC is committed to the work and progress of safer communities and preventing violence.
(4/5)
It might make sense if heβs trying to create compelling TV and distract folks from the real scandals heβs facing, but it doesnβt make our city safer & itβs a dangerous abuse of power and authority.
(3/5)
National Guard soldiers are trained for warfare & natural disasters, not for community policing. Every American should be deeply concerned with what theyβre witnessing today.
(2/5)
The President taking over local control of MPD & putting the US military onto the streets of DC under the guise of public safety is wrong. Itβs an extreme, outrageous, and dangerous move for our city and the safety of all our residents.
(1/5)
He also ensured space for DC Vault, and the skate park is protected. These were real concerns for families and young people, and Charles fought to keep them in the plan before supporting the deal.

Fields at RFK will stay open
The Fields at RFK will stay open during construction because CM Allen insisted the commitment be in writing. That wasnβt guaranteed in the original deal, but came to be thanks to the thousands of residents who signed our petition to save The Fields.

Charles pushed for even more β like taking in sales tax on personal seat licenses. Even though that amendment didnβt pass, the deal is now significantly stronger.

A better return for taxpayers
DC taxpayers deserve a better return on their investment, which is why CM Allen fought for changes to bring in nearly $800M in additional revenue to the city. The final deal now includes more sales tax revenue at the stadium going back to DC, shared parking garage profits, & smarter financing.
(1/2)
He also added key protections for the Anacostia and ensured stormwater standards canβt be waived or weakened. With those updates, DC and the Commanders will set a national example for sustainability.

Protecting the Anacostia River
The stadium at RFK will now be designed, built, and maintained to meet the highest green LEED Platinum building standards and will follow DC environmental laws. Those werenβt in the original deal: CM Allen fought to lock in those changes right up until the morning of the vote.
(1/2)
The new version of the deal prohibits developers from asking for more public subsidies for housing & sets deadlines with penalties to ensure homes get built. These are major improvements, & heβs continuing to work w/ other Cms to go even further before the final vote in September.

Housing in the stadium deal
When CM Allen started pushing on the stadium deal, the promises of affordable housing sounded better than reality. He fought to make sure those promises would be kept and got results.
(1/2)
He fought for a better future that prioritizes transit over traffic, with plans to allow a potential Metro station at Oklahoma Avenue, and a new transit fund with up to $20 million annually for Metrorail, Metrobus, and improved access to the RFK campus. Thatβs a win for the city.

About 2,000 planned parking spots and one of the garages were removed from the RFK stadium deal. That change didnβt just happen: CM Allen pushed hard to get us there.

DDOT plans to begin construction on the Garfield Park-Canal Park Connector Project today, Aug. 4, through the week, weather permitting.
Please obey all detour signs. Pedestrian access, vehicle traffic, and curbside parking will be restricted at this location during construction hours.
Thanks to the Nationals for this afternoonβs Ward 6 Day at the Ballpark! While the score of the game wasnβt exactly what we wanted, the friends and neighbors packing the stands was fun to see! And thanks Screech for letting Everett borrow your hat! βΎοΈ
