Imagine a world where we are seen
Treated as ordinary human beings
To know that we matter and have a voice
A place to belong and have a choice

We wake every day and face a new battle
And sometimes it feels we are treated like cattle
Told that support just isn’t there yet
We learn to accept our need can’t be met

We watch the sadness our families suffer
Our anxiety grows they try hard to buffer
Our siblings protect and learn to be strong
But often it feels so very wrong

We wish you could look beyond what you see
Take a moment to learn that I am just me
So do not limit what we can do
Give us hope to create something new

Nothing is impossible CalebsCause wants to show
Things can change so let’s have a go!
New laws can be made we have still have time
We are worth the effort it’s our turn to shine

One of our twins couldn't access her child trust fund because she is disabled Leah, now 19, was unable to access her savings even though her twin brother could. Her family say it's 'so unfair'

Unfortunately this is all too familiar for us.I cannot get a bank account for my son as he lacks mental capacity accessing his trust fund is another issue without β€˜Controllership’ but I’ve been told Court of Protection doesn’t exist in NI?With no Post19 SEN laws in place?

Why is Post 19 SEN Legislation so crucial for young adults in Northern Ireland?
Legislation plays a critical role in shaping and safeguarding post-19 education, training, and care services in Northern Ireland (NI) to ensure equality, inclusivity, and quality outcomes for individuals
Legislation ensures access to further education, apprenticeships, and vocational training for individuals over 19, particularly those with disabilities or additional needs, by mandating inclusive practices

Laws provide the structure for funding mechanisms, ensuring public and private resources are directed appropriately to support education, training, and skills development for post-19 learners.
Legislation promotes lifelong learning by supporting access to adult education programs, enabling individuals to reskill or upskill at various stages of their lives.

Specific laws ensure tailored support for vulnerable groups, including care leavers, unemployed individuals, and those with disabilities, fostering greater social inclusion
NI's legislative framework ensures alignment with UK-wide and EU directives, particularly in areas like equality, skills development, and safeguarding, ensuring a cohesive approach across regions
By addressing these aspects, legislation creates a robust system that supports individuals' growth, ensures fairness, and aligns post 19 education and training with societal and economic needs

Did you know?
According to the Association of Colleges, there are approximately 99 specialist colleges across England and Wales.
A recent debate in the UK
Parliament mentioned that there are 130 specialist further education colleges catering to individuals with more complex disabilities whose needs cannot be met in mainstream settings.
In Northern Ireland, there are no specialist further education colleges exclusively for students with disabilities
