Hi @springernature.com
How come this article got published in Scientific Reports despite not meeting any of the criteria you claim to use for clinical trials?

Well, nicer than the French can be a low bar, especially Paris ;P

Well I am biased but also I've had people explicitly tell me they find it easier to understand Swiss French people than French people!

Of course the alternative explanation is we're slower/dumber. :D

But if you do learn French, the best one is of course Swiss French, we speak slower, have sensible numbers, and kept long vowels so fewer words are homophones 😎

Like I'm happy to help people find the train station or the bathroom in "French for foreigners", it's nice that they're trying. But I can't both hold a conversation and constantly think about vocabulary and pronunciation so that the other side understands me.

30.11.2025 22:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

As a native speaker I don't recommend learning it outside of a francophone context. Otherwise you learn fancy written French that won't get you anywhere in practice because it's genuinely exhausting for a native speaker to have a conversation in that language register.

I'm no longer surprised by problems in @acm.org papers, but these two PubPeer comments deserve a special mention:

The author in common in both self-plagiarism cases is... the ACM CEO. Oops.

The death toll in the russian terrorist strike against Ternopil has risen to 35. The 12yo girl succumbed to her wounds after doctors had hard fought to save her life for 9d. Her mother was killed too and her sister is still in the hospital.

35 innocent souls stolen at once.

What does it take to publish in Scientific Reports?

Access to an LLM, a few weeks, and 2690$ for the APC.

What does it take to obtain a retraction?

A lot of sleuthing time & work, pubpeer, repeated emails, time, evaluation committees, appeals, and more.

Let's make errors like this costly!

Will say again. If this was London or Paris, it would not be tolerated. But we expect Ukrainians to put up with this horror every night. Indeed, we in the west are getting inured to it. It should enrage us.

PubPeer - Search publications and join the conversation. PubPeer enables scientists to search for their publications or their peers publications and provide feedback and/or start a conversation anonymously.

Il y a aussi un scientifique appelé Hitler Louis, moyennement connu dans le monde de l'intégrité scientifique de par son nom et le nombre d'articles qu'il a dû retirer 😬

It's kind of nuts how quickly Switzerland went from being pretty backwards socially to being reasonable... here's the gay marriage vote from a few years ago, Appenzell Innerrhoden went from opposing women's suffrage by 20 to 1 to accepting gay marriage in 30 years!

Ukraine is currently experiencing rolling blackouts from Russian strikes, btw.
