Teens, Social Media and Mental Health Parents are more worried than teens about teen mental health. Both groups – especially parents – partly blame social media. But teens also see benefits.

48% of US teens say social media sites have a mostly negative effect on people their age, up from 32% in 2022. But fewer teens (14%) think social media sites negatively affect them personally.

It’s been at least a decade that the Brazilian left isn’t capable of getting so much people in their protests. The combination of Bolsonaro trying to be saved by Trump and the House trying to approve a bill to make sure no MP is punished ever seems to have resurrected lefties' demonstrations

The study documents that belief in electoral misinformation undermines trust in news. The strategy of disseminating disinformation weakens news organizations’ relationships w/ audiences, and explains why leaders w/ authoritarian aspirations would try to raise public’s suspicions about journalism

The reason for this becomes clear when we see results from a @reutersinstitute.bsky.social study during the 2022 Brazilian elections, showing that using news from legacy news media is associated with belief in fewer claims of electoral misinformation over time

After Bolsonaro's trial last week, I've written about how the disinformation campaign and attacks on journalism were part of a broader strategy to erode democracy in Brazil. English here:

Most work out there argues that it doesn't pay off for center-right parties to move closer to the far-right.

Using some of the best evidence yet, this paper shows that the same is true for center *left* parties.

Crucial finding as these parties increasingly move in a nativist direction.

“We are desperately concerned for our journalists in Gaza, who are increasingly unable to feed themselves and their families. For many months, these independent journalists have been the world’s eyes and ears on the ground in Gaza. They are now facing the same dire circumstances as those they are covering.

“Journalists endure many deprivations and hardships in warzones. We are deeply alarmed that the threat of starvation is now one of them.

“We once again urge the Israeli authorities to allow journalists in and out of Gaza. It is essential that adequate food supplies reach the people there.”

Plot with the evolution of vote share for CH: 1.3% to 7.28 % to 18.06% to 22.08%

The Portuguese far right party CH has been growing spectacularly, shattering views of the country as immune to this phenomenon.

This has prompted a discussion about where their votes come from.

Some thoughts on this, prompted by newly released survey data:
