On the day set for destruction, Jews defended themselves across the empire. Purim commemorates the reversal of fortune. We read the scroll, give gifts and charity, and celebrate. Esther’s courage and Mordechai’s wisdom made survival possible and inspired generations.

Esther invited the king and Haman to two private banquets. The first built trust and gauged the king’s favor. At the second she revealed her Jewish identity and exposed Haman’s plot. The king was furious at Haman’s betrayal. Haman was executed on the gallows he built for Mordechai.

Haman persuaded the king to authorize the destruction of every Jew. A date was chosen by casting lots, called pur in Persian. The decree was sealed with the king’s ring. Bureaucracy became an executioner. One man’s whim could determine the fate of thousands across the empire.

Before the crisis, Mordechai uncovered a plot to assassinate the king. He reported it, saving Achashverosh's life. The king wanted to honor him, but Mordechai’s role went unnoticed. Haman, now prime minister, hated Mordechai for refusing to bow and plotted to destroy all Jews.

Among them was Esther, a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordechai. She won the king’s favor with beauty, intelligence, and grace. Mordechai advised her to conceal her Jewish identity. Inside the palace she had access to power but no protection for herself or her people.

King Achashverosh ruled through spectacle and absolute law. When Queen Vashti defied him, she was removed. A search began for a new queen, bringing young women from across the empire to the palace to compete for the king’s favor.

The story comes from the Book of Esther. Jews were scattered across the Persian Empire, visible and politically vulnerable. Their safety depended entirely on royal favor. A single misstep could erase a community, leaving them at the mercy of palace intrigue.

Purim is festive, full of costumes, wine, and joy. It celebrates the moment a decree of destruction was overturned and a people were saved. Survival depended on courage, cunning, and one woman willing to risk everything to save her people from destruction.
