No, the argument “we know what is meant,” doesn’t fly. Tossing an “underage” in front of terms used to describe adults is a deliberate attempt to lessen the impact of the crime being described.

We need stop using (and calling out the media when they use it) the term “underage woman” instead of “girl” or “child” to refer to juvenile victims of predators. (This applies to males as well, although I don’t know when I have heard “underage man” used.)

You know what women and men are? ADULTS.

You know what girls and boys are? CHILDREN.

When is the last time children have been referred to as underage adults? No? Exactly. It’s not a real thing. I hope we can all agree that children are NOT adults of any sort.
