A sparrow-sized bird with mostly grey and mottled brown plumage with a reddish cap on its head is perching on a slender leafless tree branch with a brown acorn-like seed pod (a caktin) at its feet. It is picking at the catkin, showing us only the top of its head.
Look at the cute little head of this Redpoll as she picks apart a birch catkin to get at the seeds.

A Coot stealthily steps forward, its body low and eyes focused, as if carefully sneaking into view. Its sleek black feathers contrast sharply with its bright white bill and forehead shield, while its oversized, lobed toes are mid-step.
Oooh look! A Coot has snuck into your feed...

Glacier the skunk is chowing down on an apple in her home at the Cincinnati Zoo.
Until 1993, Glacier would have been in Family Mustelidae with weasels & badgers.
But molecular evidence showed that her ancestors diverged 60 MYA, so she gets her own family: Mephitidae which means, roughly, "stinky."

Little blue heron flying to the right over blue water. The lower half of the bird is cropped out of the photo and you can see his blue back and blue upper wing and the wingtip is curled up wavelike and is dark underneath. The shape and color of his dark underwing provides a kind of mirror image to his dark head, which is washed in deep burgundy. His blue back shows purple highlights. His beak is long and daggerlike and tipped in black and his yellow eye looks forward with great intention. The background is composed of bright blue sparkling water.
Have shared this shot before but I donβt have the personal strength to resist doubling up on todayβs #birdoftheday themes of #waterbirds and #blue #birds

American Pygmy Kingfisher, Guyana
From a big Guyanese bird to a tiny one...
This is the American Pygmy Kingfisher. As the name implies, it's the smallest kingfisher in the Americas. I photographed it through a foreground bush to soften the surroundings.
