I’m (not) sorry for what I said while watching sports. Or the news.

Like if you think having tariffs was going to be bad for Trump and taking them away will be better for him and you’re not factoring in TRUMP TAKING A HUGE PUBLIC L AND LOOKING LIKE THE WORLD’S BIGGEST LOSER, you’re doing it wrong.

So I’m just getting reception and seeing that SCOTUS struck down tariffs, and seeing sentiment bubble up that this has given Trump a huge boost and oh woe is us, and what in the blasted fuck is wrong with people?

This is not a man capable of parrying a devastating loss into a surprising victory. This is a toddler with one move (I am America and if you don’t like me you’re a foreign enemy).

What I wouldn’t give to be a fly on the wall while Trump undoubtedly crashes out about the Supreme Court striking down his tariffs...

extremely funny that the Supreme Court says absolutely nothing about how the tariffs are supposed to be reimbursed ahead of the endless flood of lawsuits that are coming

the administration is already running out of lawyers! have fun with that

*Consumers* didn't. Domestic entities bore almost all of the tariff burden but the degree of pass-through to prices paid by the final consumer was far lower than the pass-through to direct imports as best we can tell right now.

The actual amount collected under IEEPA is somewhat unknown but it's likely well over $100bn. And claims are transferrable, so a small importer can sell them at a discount (say, 80 cents on the dollar) to another entity that would bundle and sue over a whole bunch of smaller claims.

Just realized how many lawyers they're going to need in the US Court of International trade, it's going to be fishing with dynamite for plaintiffs seeking to recoup tariffs paid IMO. Say it with me now, they have run out of lawyers.

20.02.2026 15:22 — 👍 835    🔁 148    💬 19    📌 16

Okay my read: since the court struck down the tariffs as unlawful from the start, it's refund time. Jurisdiction will be US Court of International Trade, they'll have to unpack it. But there should be refunds coming. Looks like a complete repudiation of IEEPA-based tariffs and total loss for Trump.

6-3 decision, they got creamed. Some nuances - liberals wanted to not do major questions doctrine stuff. Kavanaugh a surprise dissent.

That's gonna be a hard sell. Prison reform and criminal justice reform is gonna be a lot easier to advocate for among that crowd.

20.02.2026 05:43 — 👍 39    🔁 2    💬 1    📌 0

So when you talk to a Median Voter from that population about prison abolition, these are the people they naturally tend to picture - the dance studio owner raping his students. The Catholic priest who raped kids who attended his church, whose parents trusted him.

20.02.2026 05:41 — 👍 43    🔁 2    💬 1    📌 0

When you're talking about people who are not from marginalized communities, people who have access to resources, lawyers, etc., most of the time when those people are convicted and sent to prison, it's for pretty solid reasons.

20.02.2026 05:39 — 👍 53    🔁 4    💬 2    📌 0

When I think about the people I have known personally in my life who have gone to prison, they're almost all guilty of pretty horrible crimes. The dance studio owner who was raping students. The priest in my hometown parish who raped two kids.

This is not a dunk, but it's a useful jumping off point - I see this sentiment a lot on BlueSky and I don't think it's true. I think the Median Voter's idea of the criminal justice system is shaped mostly by the big crime stories of their hometowns.

“sick child as a prop” is a widespread phenomenon, this one is adding “sick child caused by preventable disease parent refused to prevent”

to piggyback off this correct point they do not see their children as full people they see them as props snd extensions of the parents!!!!

Team USA celebrating with a bunch of sticks and helmets and gloves flying everywhere. Soaring above them all is one goalie stick, higher than the boards surrounding the rink, so far away from the goalie that it doesn't even look like she threw it.
(Also sad Canadians in the background.)
