HiPOD: Defrosting Dunes in Kaiser Crater

The dark sand dune at the center of this observation is covered in a blanket of white seasonal ice in the winter. In this Martian springtime image, the western slope of the dune is partly defrosted.

View of the Solar Orbiter spacecraft facing the scorching Sun.

There is a paradox at the heart of Solar Orbiter.

On one hand, we wanted to take the closest ever images of the Sun. On the other, the closer we'd go, the more damaging the light we sought to collect would become.

Discover how technology solved that paradox πŸ‘‰ www.esa.int/Science_Expl...

🧐 How many theories can be verified with a single #GravitationalWave signal? At least three, if this signal is GW250114, observed by the @ligo.org - Virgo - KAGRA Collaboration in January 2025.

New masses in the stellar graveyard plot, showing astronomical observations of black holes and neutron stars. The number of gravitational-wave observations of black holes is overwhelming. The plot is arranged to look nice, the horizontal axis has no meaning, but the vertical one shows masses. We have a significant range of masses from about 1 solar mass to over 200 solar masses for our largest merger remnant. New out today is a neutron star black hole binary GW230518_125908, as well as a lot of binary black holes.

Results from the first part of our fourth LIGO @egovirgo.bsky.social KAGRA observing run are out today!

We're pleased to share the largest catalog of gravitational-wave observations with more discoveries of black holes and neutron stars

HiPOD: Layering in a Graben Wall

A short but elegant rationale: β€œnice layering apparent in Mars Orbiter Camera images, worth a closer look for regional stratigraphy.” Graben are depressions that form along parallel faults due to tectonic extension.

Image cutout shows a very large and dark dune field on the surface of Mars. There are ripples and gullies on the dunes as well as visible dust devil tracks throughout the scene, which is less than 5 km (3 miles) across.

This overlaps with a previous image we obtained in 2009 and we have also taken six additional images to monitor gully formation. We want to see how any dune ripples have moved since then.

I Verified My LinkedIn Identity. Here's What I Actually Handed Over. I wanted a blue badge on LinkedIn. To get it, I gave a US company my passport, my face, and my biometric data. Then I read the fine print.

Uhhuh... LinkedIn users, read this *very* carefully. Especially if you are EU citizen. Facial scans are increasingly demanded also by other net services, consider very carefully if it is worth it.

More boosters, more power: Ariane 6 lifts off with four boosters for the first time

Today's launch of the first four-booster version of Ariane 6, operated by Arianespace, took 32 satellites for Amazon LEO to low-Earth orbit. This success confirms Europe’s readiness in heavy-lift capability and is key to ensuring autonomous access to space for Europeans.
