HiPOD: Defrosting Dunes in Kaiser Crater

The dark sand dune at the center of this observation is covered in a blanket of white seasonal ice in the winter. In this Martian springtime image, the western slope of the dune is partly defrosted.

New masses in the stellar graveyard plot, showing astronomical observations of black holes and neutron stars. The number of gravitational-wave observations of black holes is overwhelming. The plot is arranged to look nice, the horizontal axis has no meaning, but the vertical one shows masses. We have a significant range of masses from about 1 solar mass to over 200 solar masses for our largest merger remnant. New out today is a neutron star black hole binary GW230518_125908, as well as a lot of binary black holes.

A short but elegant rationale: “nice layering apparent in Mars Orbiter Camera images, worth a closer look for regional stratigraphy.” Graben are depressions that form along parallel faults due to tectonic extension.

HiPOD: Landscape Evolution

This overlaps with a previous image we obtained in 2009 and we have also taken six additional images to monitor gully formation. We want to see how any dune ripples have moved since then.

HiPOD: Icy Cliffs on Mars

This area, on the western edge of Milankovic Crater on Mars, has a thick deposit of sediment that covers a layer rich in ice. The ice is not obvious unless you look in color.
